LEVEL UP Your Reading
What does lexile mean?
What is your current lexile?
Which is higher, your fiction or your nonfiction lexile?
Which reading subskill is your strongest?
What lexile is the target for success on the SAT college entrance exam?
What lexile is the target for success for college and career readiness?
What lexile is the target for success on the ASVAB military exam?
If you don't know these things now, you will in the next few weeks!
SMS is launching a building-wide push to grow student reading skill to better prepare you for success at high school and beyond!
We'll be using the Newsela portal to read articles and other texts to both inform us of current events and provide us with content knowledge. Some reading will be directly assigned by teachers and you will be supported with close reading activities such as finding main idea, learning vocabulary, identifying author's perspective, etc. Other reading will be assigned by the teacher without the support. And of course every student will have an expectation to complete independent choice reading in the portal. This can be done in Guided Study Hall or at home!
Today's Newsela learning activity is to LEVEL UP your understanding of the student data portal called the Student Binder. After your homeroom teacher shows the video, open your Newsela Student Binder and explore your data portal!
Next week we'll LEVEL UP our understanding of lexiles!
Picture Retakes Thursday
Thursday, November 14th is picture retake day. You will need to have a picture made if
- you were absent on our original picture day on September 18th.
- you moved in after picture day.
- your purchased picture package did not meet your expectation and you are returning the complete, uncut package for a free retake.
Picture order forms are available in the office and should be picked up today!
Tie-Dye Dance
Hey SMS are you ready to dance? The SMS Student Council will be putting on a dance on Friday, November 15. It will be taking place at SMS from 6:30 to 9:00. Admission is $3 per student. If you turned in your drug free pledge, you get in for free courtesy of the SADD Chapter.
The theme of the dance is TIE-DYE. We are excited to see what you wear. We will also be selling concessions, glow sticks, and other colorful novelty items. All of these items will be just one dollar. So bring a few dollars and support a great cause. The proceeds from the concessions and the glow items will be going to the make a wish foundation. Make a Wish is a non profit foundation that creates life changing wishes for kids with critical illnesses. Hope to see you there!

GETTING IN AND GETTING OUT OF THE DANCE
Dance doors will open at 6:30 PM. Don't come early, you'll freeze! Eighth graders will enter via the PE hall door and 6th/7th graders will enter via the bus door. Students can put coats/hats/bags in the Great Room. Because of the large volume of cars at pick up, we ask cars with an 8th grader should pick up at the office door. Cars without an 8th grader should pick up at the bus door. Make sure your ride knows to pick you up at 9:00 P.M.
Chaperones may park in the activity lot. The chaperone meeting starts at 6:15 in the cafeteria.
Winter Weather Decisions!
In the case that existing snow/sleet/ice/fog/rain/freezing temps or the potential of these calamities would disrupt safe travel to school for walkers, drivers, and/or bus riders, we will cancel or delay school. The decision to delay or cancel school is made by Dr. Marc Slaton, SCSD2 Superintendent. He consults with local law enforcement and up-to-date weather forecasts and makes a decision in the best interest of our safety.
While we all want to know immediately, sometimes these decisions have to wait until morning. In any case, be ready for the exciting winter season and the potential for snow days and school delays!
School Schedule Change Info - Answers to the questions you may have!
- The superintendent will send out a SchoolMessenger call and notify local TV and radio stations as soon as a decision is made. If your phone didn't ring, no decision has been made. Be sure to have your phone numbers up-to-date in Harmony! The SchoolMessenger call will go to the HOME PHONE number for each student.
- If the decision is made in the wee hours of the morning, a call will go out early. This helps families that have parents with early work hours.
- If we cancel school, we will not have any clubs or sports that night (this includes games and practices).
- If we cancel school, we will have the missed schedule day (A or B) on the next day back.
- If we cancel school, we will have to make it up!!
- If we have a late start (to allow drivers to navigate icy/snowy roads in daylight), we will start at 10:05. Bus routes will run 2 hours later than normal. Be patient with buses on late start days as routes can be slowed by bad roads.
- If we have a late start, your parent can still drop you off at SMS after 7:30 AM if their work schedule requires bringing you to school early.
- If we have a late start, we do NOT have to make it up!
