SLCS District Update

Superintendent's Update
Greetings SLCS Families and Staff Members,
It has been a great week celebrating our teachers and staff. Thank you to all the students, PTO’s and parents who have shown our staff how much they are appreciated. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
It can be difficult to find exactly the right words to acknowledge truly how amazing the SLCS teachers and staff members are without sounding cliche’. Regardless how large or small one’s role is in the district, we all have the amazing potential to positively impact our students' educational experience on a daily basis. While there is no more meaningful work than what our amazing staff do on a daily basis, I truly believe no one does it better. Know that you make a difference, that you are appreciated, and that you make SLCS the special place that it is each and every day.
A special shoutout to all of our SLCS moms. Thank you for trusting us with your children and we hope you have a great Mother’s Day Weekend.

Influenza-Update from the School Nurse
In the past several weeks we have seen an increase in students being diagnosed with Influenza A. Influenza is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system — your nose, throat and lungs. Influenza is commonly called the flu, but it's not the same as stomach "flu" viruses (Norovirus or Rotavirus) that cause diarrhea and vomiting. At first, the flu may seem like a common cold with a runny nose, sneezing and sore throat. But colds usually develop slowly, whereas the flu tends to come on suddenly. And although a cold can be a bother, you usually feel much worse with the flu. Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk.
This is a good time to review some basic hygiene etiquette. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw used tissues in the trash. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands. Remember to immediately wash your hands after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing as well as before you eat any meals.
There are treatments for the flu, but they will depend on the timing of when your symptoms developed, as well as the severity of those symptoms. There are several types of antiviral medications. Consult your primary care physician if you suspect you are suffering from the flu. Detailed information about all types of Influenza can be found here.
Special Education
The Michigan Council for Exceptional Children created the Michigan Foundation for Exceptional Children (MFEC) in 2001. This scholarship program is intended to provide support for educational/training opportunities when students are no longer eligible for special education (and Section 504) programs and services provided by public education (i.e., graduation or reaching 26 years of age). Awards can be granted up to $1,500 and would support anything from transportation, special equipment, tutoring, including tuition. These funds are intended to augment, not replace, funds available through other agencies.
Nomination packets are due May 21, 2022. Notifications will be mailed by June 18, 2022.

Wellness
Four in 10 teenagers report they feel “persistently sad or hopeless,” according to a recent CDC survey. A new workshop series for teens can help young people struggling with these kinds of feelings. The online workshops are geared toward helping teens understand the causes and consequences of emotions. Participants will learn how to turn off self-judgment, manage relationships better, and regulate their ups and downs -- with the goal of finding more meaning and purpose in life.
To participate, all you need is an Internet connection to Zoom, paper and pencil, and an open mind. All sessions are free of charge. Click here to REGISTER or visit Michigan.gov/StayWell.
