Validating and Affirming Perspectives ~ Outrageous Love
By Dr. Sharroky Hollie, Executive Director, Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning: You have now completed 5 or 6 months of the school year and you are looking forward to the remainder of the year. You have had great successes with most of your students. But, then, there are a few students that despite your efforts you have failed so far. To be clear, failed here means that you have not accomplished with these students what you set out to do at the beginning of the year. At this juncture, these students are in need of outrageous love or the intangible essence of cultural responsiveness. Outrageous love goes beyond ordinary love. Outrageous love calls you to be and do something different, creative, bold, and brave. Outrageous love believes, does not give up, and brings no blame to the students. Outrageous love focuses on incremental progress, not overall success. Outrageous love requires responsiveness in how you teach and how you relate to these students. To serve those who need outrageous love means you have to assess three aspects of your mindset or attitude: disposition, filter, and perspective. First ask yourself, am I happy, am I in a good place mentally, emotionally, and physically? In order to make a difference with the underserved you must be "happy." Next, do a reboot for how you are looking at the students who need more of you. Make sure you are not looking through your deficit lens. Make sure you are not playing the blame game. Make sure you are not using excuses, such as larger issues related to your school or district. Last, start anew with your VABBing in respect to your instructional practices (skillset) and how you relate to your students. Start now! Who needs outrageous love? Are you prepared to give outrageous love? What will be the "more" love - what will you do differently going forward?
