What? 2019 Literacy Symposium
This two-day training will focus on strategies to strengthen the literacy skills of students who are deaf/hard of hearing and strategies to increase the students' motivation to read and write. This training will be presented face-to-face at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts and Athletic Complex, and it will be available via livestream throughout Texas.

Stella Egbert, M.A., M.Ed.
Stella Egbert has taught high school English as well as college English to deaf students at Cal State Northridge before becoming an ECE-Elementary principal. Currently, she serves as the Director of Instruction at the Texas School for the Deaf. Stella earned an M.A. in Linguistics with an emphasis on teaching English as a Second Language from George Mason University, and she earned an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Texas State University. Stella is currently a doctoral student in Texas State University’s School Improvement Program.

Brent Bechtold, M.Ed.
Brent Bechtold is the Reading Specialist for the Deaf High School at the Florida School for the Deaf & the Blind (FSDB). He works with students one-on-one and in small groups; models lessons for teachers; assesses students' literacy strengths and areas of opportunity via progress monitoring and diagnostic assessments; provides professional learning workshops and support for teachers; mentors new teachers; coaches experienced teachers; gathers, tracks, and analyzes student reading and writing data; and facilitates professional book chats. He created and currently manages the motivational literacy programs titled Every Dragon Reads & Writes Every Day, the 212° Dragon Readers Book Club, and the FSDB OverDrive ebook and audiobook collection. For 18 years, Brent has worked as an ELAR teacher, Assistant Principal, and Reading Specialist with kindergarten through post-secondary students who are D/HH. His primary focus has always been on literacy development. Brent attended Flagler College as a Lewis Scholar and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2000 with bachelor’s degrees in Deaf Education, Secondary Education, and English. He also attended the University of North Florida where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2011 with a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. Brent has a real passion for teaching. Now he teaches the teachers, but when given the opportunity, he enjoys teaching the students, too.
