Five Focus Areas
Safety and Security
Earthquake Drill--Will be this Monday morning between 9:30-9:45. We will follow up with a whole school evacuation. Please talk with your kids ahead of time for what they would do in the event of an earthquake. We will announce this over the PA when to do the earthquake drill and a fire alarm will be pulled to evacuate.
Bobcat Dash Directions---Bring your kids to Field 3 at Cherry Park and have them there at the beginning of your Related Arts time. Please be there on time. Kindergarten will go at 11:40 instead of your normal time at 1:30. We are not screening adults who are coming to watch. We will have people assigned all along the paths to and from and around Field 3 to make sure kids are coming back with you. If a parent wants to sign out a child, he or she will need to sign them out from the office once you get back. We will gather on the amphitheater on the kindergarten playground at 1:45 for a whole school picture. We will not have Related Arts on that day given that all Related Arts teachers will have positions and responsibilities at Cherry Park. Officer Wiles will be at Field 3 to help with anything needed. Please be sure to bring your walkie-talkie. Kids will run for 20+ minutes and we will have a short assembly at the end of each period. All kids and staff will wear their Bobcat Dash shirts during the run. Know that this will be our one, big fundraiser for PTO. We want to do all we can to support the effort that will raise lots of money for our school. In sponsorships alone, PTO has raised $22,000 so far. If you need to be absent on Friday, be sure to see me on Monday. Here's the schedule for classes:
8:00 Fifth Grade
8:55 Fourth Grade
9:50 Third Grade
10: 45 Second Grade
11:40 Kindergarten (This time is not their normal Related Arts time.)
12:35 First Grade
Locked Doors---DID YOU KNOW? In studying over 250 active shooter incidents in the US since the year 2000, the FBI has not found a single documented instance where an active shooter entered a classroom that had a locked door. Locked doors work! They are the single most effective thing you can do in your classroom to maintain a safe and secure environment. Board policy ECA supports keeping all classroom doors shut and locked during periods of instruction or while the room is unoccupied.

Reminder about Recess Detention--"The district encourages the use of physical activity as a reward when feasible. Schools shall not deny a student participation in recess or other physical activity as a form of discipline or for classroom make up time. Schools shall not use physical activity e.g. running/walking laps, pushups as a form of punishment. Physical activity during the school day (including but not limited to recess, classroom physical activity breaks, or physical education) will not be withheld as punishment for any reason. This does not include participation on sports teams or with other sports-related after school activities, nor does it include participation on sports teams with specific academic requirements." (Please note that this is a district policy that was approved by the board in June 2017). If you have questions, the complete policy is below.
Third Tuesdays--From Claudia Notaro: Hi Friends!

Parent Conferences--I have received so many compliments about the conferencing you have done with parents. I know it has taken lots and lots of time and effort. Thank you for maximizing the time you spend with them. I know that you've had lots of tough conversations as well. Being honest, respectful, and supportive is a difficult balance but it is the right thing to do.
Communication Tools--Every grade level and area has someone from the Communication Committee who can now send messages to parents through Parentlink. Please be thoughtful about how we use that to best communicate information to our families.
