Surfside Shark Bites
Week of August 21-25, 2023
A note From Principal Frandsen
School has now been underway for a few weeks and students should be making strong progress on their coursework. This is also a time when some students may get distracted from school by social media, relationships, or other distractions. If your student is struggling with issues that are not related to academics, please know that we have a variety of resources available to support students. Please let us know if you would like additional information.
We are now seeking parent members for our assembling our School Site Council and English Language Advisory Committee. If you are interested, please let us know so we can add your name to our ballot.
Lastly, please take a moment to review your student's grades and attendance in Aeries. If one or both of these elements are not what you expect them to be, now is the time to contact the teachers for information and review the next steps with your students.
Have a great weekend!

School Site Council
The School Site Council (SSC) is comprised of 12 members: six school team members and six community members. Staff members include the school principal, one non-teaching staff member, and four teachers. Other members include a combination of parents/guardians, students, and/or community members. The SCC develops and oversees Surfside's School Plan for Student Achievement, which includes the planned actions and expenditures to support student outcomes and overall performance. The School Plan aligns with the actions included in the District's Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which lays out goals for the entire district.

Shark Nibbles…K-5th Updates
Virtual Sessions began this week and are a great way for students to connect with each other for fun & learning. Join in for explorations in science, math, music, chapter book read-alouds, Social Emotional Learning, art & writing.
We are looking forward to beginning our in-person sessions on Monday, 8/28. Students can drop in at any time during these sessions. See the Parent Guide for more information.
Virtual Sessions & In-Person Sessions are offered, but not required, for students who are meeting program requirements for program progress and on-time work submission.
THANK YOU to all families who were able to start their iReady Diagnostic. Log into iReady each day, and work for 30 minutes for a painless way to meet this requirement and complete the Diagnostic on time. We appreciate you!
Ready Math Pacing
Since Ready Math is a new curriculum this year, we are still working on the pacing. Please do not feel pressured to rush through. As always, you do not have to complete an entire unit by the work turn-in date. This is especially true during Diagnostic windows, at the beginning of the year, etc. We will be monitoring the math pacing this year to fine tune how many lessons are ideal for each unit.
For all unit work, turn in what you have been able to accomplish, and keep working on the rest before starting new packets. Please reach out to the Supervising Teachers if you have any questions on flexibility with the curriculum and packet completion. The first work turn in date is September 8, 2023.
New Families & Confused Families
Remember, we are happy to meet with families virtually or in-person to answer questions and help you get the most out of your Independent Journey! We are here for you!!
Worth Repeating …
iReady Helpful Tips-
You must access iReady from the Rapid Identity/student dashboard.
You will not be able to login through iReady Connect, because Oceanside Unified uses a Single Sign-on Serve.
If you need any help with your students username/password for Rapid Identity, please email your Supervising Teacher. K-2 passwords are all defaulted to your students birthday in MMDDYYYY format.
You will not see any assignments/lessons until after the first Diagnostic. The lessons you will see after the diagnostic will be personalized for your student.
At any time, however, you can find all the digital lessons, videos etc, by clicking “Math", and then the icon at the bottom of the screen that says “bookshelf.”
The Diagnostic window opens on Monday, August 21, 2023. The Diagnostics MUST be carefully completed by September 15, 2023. Please plan to work on the Diagnostics for 20-30 minutes daily. Having students work on their Diagnostics for a small prescribed amount of time daily encourages accurate results and helps students avoid Diagnostic fatigue. For more information on the Diagnostics, please refer to the parent guide.
Please don’t forget to join your Google Classroom! Once in Rapid Identity, click on the green/yellow GC icon. You should see a small picture of the correct grade level Google Classroom- simply click “join.” Within the GC main feed you will find the virtual meeting times (including the meeting link,) links to the parent resource page, and a link to the Parent Guide.
Mr. Madsen is excited to share his love of reading with Wednesday Virtual Read-Alouds. K-5th students can join in at 8:00am for The One & Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and/or Danny, Champion of the World by Roald Dahl at 8:35am.
All the Best,
Kelly Crouthamel & Anthony Madsen, your K-5th Supervising Teachers

OUSD messages families using a platform called Blackboard Communications. This allows teachers and staff to send an email, text or voice message directly to the email address or phone number you have listed in Aeries. It’s important that all the adults in your student’s life have updated contact information in Aeries so everyone can receive important messages from your student’s school.
You no longer need to download any third party apps to receive messages from OUSD. The only district supported app that families should download is the OUSD app.Check your email or spam folder. Your login and password for the app have been sent from
firstname.lastname@example.org to the email you have in Aeries.
