Oak Ridge Family Focus
March 10th Edition
Free Popcorn
A BIG thank you to the PTA. They will be offering a free popcorn day on Wednesday. Typically, students would need to pay to receive popcorn. But the PTA has decided graciously to provide popcorn boxes free of charge.
Snapchat
As most are aware, Snapchat is a social media app that can be downloaded to your phone to send photos or chat with others. Many find it fun to use because you can take pictures or send texts while they quickly disappear (though there are many ways to save these).
However, as we find at school it can also be a place for bullying and inappropriate language. Sometimes students use the app to harass and bully one another outside of school. Then the turmoil between students is brought to school, which causes disruptions in the classroom and on the playground.
Typically when we speak to parents, most are unaware of the age requirement to download and use the Snapchat app. The age requirement is 13 years old due to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The act contains rules a company must follow when collecting information on children under the age of 13, which in essence gives parents rights over their child's information. (See the link above to see a parent's right in the COPPA laws). By setting an age requirement of 13 years old, Snapchat and many social media platforms (including Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok, etc.) are not necessarily bound by the same guidelines in the COPPA. In other words, "When a social network account is created for a child under 13, or when a child uses a false birthdate, this Federal law cannot protect their personal information from being collected and shared with third party advertisers (Huffington Post)." Even in Snapchat's Terms of Service, it states, "Many of our Services let you create, upload, post, send, receive, and store content...but you grant us a license to use that content."
We ask for your help. We ask that no child under 13 years old use Snapchat. We ask per the company policy but also to protect your child and their privacy online. If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to call the office at 708-598-5713. As always, thank you for your support. We know with your help, our students and your children can remain safe online.
5th Grade Parents
- School Physical and Dental packets for 6th grade went home on Friday. Please return those forms to Oak Ridge by May 24th.
- Please read the letter regarding this week's presentation to all 5th grade students regarding Health and Erin's Law.
Pie Your Favorite Teacher
Students are working really hard to earn tickets to pie their favorite teachers. Each week students can earn raffle tickets from their ELA and Math teacher by doing extra work outside of class. Students who achieved their classroom goal can put their ticket(s) in a bucket of their favorite teacher during lunch. Soon, students will get a chance to pie their favorite teacher in front of all their friends. Talk to your child and/or child's teacher about how he or she can earn tickets to pie a teacher!
We don't want to jinx it, but it looks like we are finally getting out of the cold winter temperatures and looking ahead to warmer spring weather. The weather still requires jackets and long sleeves, but probably only one layer instead of the two or three we've been using :)
Have a great week!
