West Point El. Parent Update
Week of October 23, 2023
Dear West Point Families,
We hope you are enjoying your Fall Break! As a reminder, school is not in session on Monday, October 23 so teachers can participate in a Professional Day. We look forward to welcoming all of our students back to school for the start of 2nd term on Tuesday, October 24.
Students who met their 1st term reading and math goals will be receiving their brag tags in the next couple of weeks. They will be setting new reading and math goals for 2nd term. Please ask them about their goals and help them work to achieve them. As a reminder, students are also working to earn their attendance brag tag each month. They earn their brag tag by having only 0-1 absences for the month.
All students should have received their school t-shirts last week. Please let your child's teacher know if a t-shirt didn't come home. We are encouraging all of our students to wear their school t-shirt or our school colors (blue and yellow) each Friday for School Spirit Friday!
Here are four important things to know for the coming week:
- Picture Retake Day will be our first day back, which is Tuesday, October 24. Information for ordering pictures is included below.
- This week is Red Ribbon Week. The theme for the week is, "Be kind to your mind. Live drug free." Students will be participating in activities this week sponsored by the PTA which reinforce the importance of staying drug free. We hope you can take this opportunity to have this important conversation with your students as well.
- The PTA is also sponsoring the Scholastic Book Fair and Breakfast with Buddies this week. Please see the information below for details.
- 1st Term Report Cards will be available on myDSD this Friday at 3:00 p.m.
We hope you have a great week!
Sincerely,
Marjorie Conrad and Michelle Yoho
Principal and Assistant Principal, West Point Elementary

Halloween
We have made a change to our costume policy, which our students are very excited about! 😊 Students may keep their costumes on during the remainder of the day, but we are asking that any hats or extra costume pieces be put in students' backpacks after the parade is over.
Students are invited to join in our Halloween celebration on Tuesday, October 31. We will start the day at 9:05 a.m. with our Halloween Costume Parade, which will be held outside along the track in the back field. Parents are welcome to attend the parade. Feel free to bring a lawn chair if you like. The parade route will be blocked off, but parents may sit around the outer edges of the parade loop.
- Costumes should be family friendly. They may not be gory, threatening, or offensive.
- Students may not wear masks.
- Students may not carry hand-held accessories, real or pretend (i.e., wands, weapons, etc.). Crowns or hats may be worn.
- Costumes must avoid stereotypes. Students may not dress up as an ethnic or cultural group, and skin color may not be altered to look like another race. In respect to the Native American view, please refrain from dressing as Native Americans.
Trunk or Treat this Wednesday!
October Mission Pawssible
Please encourage your students to work on the school and PTA mission of the month!
The school's Mission of the Month is to show respect in the lunchroom.
Students who consistently show respect in the lunchroom this month will receive this bonus brag tag! We are encouraging our students to show respect in the lunchroom by doing the following:
- Staying in their seat until excused
- Using an inside voice
- Using good table manners, including not taking other students' food
- Cleaning up their area when they are excused
- Listening to our lunchroom supervisors and following directions
Our lunchroom supervisors will be tracking positive behavior in the lunchroom. Students who meet this goal will receive a bonus brag tag at the end of the month! We would like to ask parents to help remind students about the importance of being respectful to adults and to each other in the lunchroom and other areas of the school.
The PTA Mission of the Month, should you choose to accept it, is to visit an assisted living center with your family.
