Growing, Learning and Achieving Together
Dear Nighthawk Families,
September has been an eventful month to say the least! All of us at Newburgh Public School are very proud of the progress that the students have made in learning the new protocols necessary to keep all of us safe. Each and every child has proven themselves confident, positive and resilient during this unprecedented time. All staff continue to work with our young people to reinforce safety practices in an encouraging and supportive manner to ensure our continued success.
During the latter weeks of September, the Limestone District School Board went through a massive reorganization of many schools, unique this year because of the creation of the LDSB Virtual School which now holds the distinction of being the largest school within the District. Newburgh Public School was the only school in the entire district that increased its staffing and class allocation as determined in the Spring. Although this necessitated a major reorganization of all classes we could not be more pleased to have gained an extra class and teacher. A huge welcome goes out to our newest staff members, Ms Laura Winslade (JK/SK) and Ms. Stephanie McEwen (Grade 6/7)!
The staffing demands of our Virtual School have necessitated the departure of our very own Vice Principal, Mme. Mary Jane Jarvis. Mme. Jarvis was selected for her exemplary skill set and considerable experience to be the Grade 4-8 Elementary Lead at the Virtual School. While we were sad to see Mme. Jarvis leave, we are proud of her achievement and wish her all the very best in her new role. Mme. Jarvis’ position will be filled for the 2020-2021 school year by a Head Teacher who will be responsible for Student Support, Planning Time Teaching and administrative assistance at Newburgh Public School. After a competitive application and interview process, we are pleased to announce that Ms. Mary-Lynn Kimmett has been chosen as the successful candidate. Ms. Kimmett is currently the Grade 3/4 and Student Support Teacher at Centreville Public School. Congratulations, Ms. Kimmett! We are now engaged in the process of selecting a replacement for Ms. Kimmett at CPS so that we may begin a smooth transition period for both schools. In the meantime, we are thrilled that Ms. Marina Pinder will continue to work out of Newburgh PS as our replacement administrator. Thank you so much, Ms. Pinder!
The staff and students at Newburgh PS have participated in a couple of very special days over the past week. On September 30th, many in our community wore orange to acknowledge Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day is a day when we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and learn more about the history of those schools. Coming together in a spirit of reconciliation and hope, communities across the country, and around the world, unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop all forms of bullying and racism and because “Every Child Matters”.
Our community also participated in the “Terry Fox Run/Walk on October 2nd, 2020. We are very proud to announce that, while we are still counting, contributions to the Terry Fox fundraiser have far surpassed our goal of $800 and our current total of almost $1450 is our third highest total collected since we started participating in the Terry Fox Run in 2004. Well done, Newburgh!
October is shaping up to be as busy as September with many exciting events happening this month. October 5-9 is Fire Safety & Prevention Week. The school will be holding its first fire drill during the week of October 5th and then participate in a Fire Department Drill inspection during the week of October 13th. Our new Supervisory Officer, Ms. Alison McDonnell will be visiting our school on October 6th and all staff and students are looking forward to showing her what we have been working on over the first month of the school year. Two lucky classes (to be dtermined this week) will be participating in a Gould Lake staff facilitated Outdoor Education adventure sometime in the next few weeks and we are anxious to hear student reports about this new and innovative experience.
Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we navigate the many expected and unexpected challenges that this year has presented. Health and safety, along with the wellness and mental health of our school community, is our number one priority as we move forward. Please continue to make your own wellness and the wellness of your family a priority.
Take good care everyone!
