Science Fest 2017

Science Fest was a hit! A big thank you goes out to all students who attended as a spectator and participant, as well as all the 8th grade GT students who volunteered their time to work our booth of Makerspace items and/or the 8th grade Science booth with Ms. Smith. They showed kids how to use Play Osmo (Coding, Tangrams, Words, Monster drawing, Masterpiece and Newton games), Space Rails, Marble Run and Snap Circuits Arcade. We had a blast and can't wait to make it an annual tradition of New Braunfels!

STEM Challenges

The week of October 9-13 8th grade GT met in the cafeteria to do STEM Challenges. Each day they changed groups so they could see who they worked well with for when groups will be actually chosen and finalized for the year. It was awesome to see how students worked together, chose team leaders, listened and took direction from one another. It was very helpful exercises to see what teams would fit the best, as well as taking personalities into consideration. That Friday they filled out a group reflection and chose top choices for who they wanted for group members.

On Monday, October 16 students were put into teams (see photo below) based on the group evaluations they filled out the Friday before. 4 groups of 4 students were put into Ms. Cowan's class and 4 groups of 4 were put into Ms. Bryant's class. Students spent the week doing Circle Time with their teacher-advisor, as well as filling out group evaluations about their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as fears and hopes they have for their teams. These are the teammates they will have for the entire year. Students will work on a skit and a team shield in the coming weeks.

On Friday, October 20th the two 8th grade GT advisories played Kickball against one another. Ms. Cowan's class won! They will continue to take days out throughout the school year for more kickball and other type of recreational activities.

Skits and Shields

On Wednesday, October 25th 8th grade GT groups performed their skits for their newly-formed teams in front of both advisory classes. There were judges who used rubrics to choose the group winners. Those who win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will get a badge for their team to display. There will be more opportunities to earn badges through challenges throughout the year. Their shields will be presented on Friday, October 27 in advisory.
