Elementary Social Studies Advocates
December Newsletter
Social Studies Newsletter
Welcome to the first newsletter for Austin ISD Social Studies Advocates. Ideally this will mean fewer emails while keeping us better connected and committed to bringing history, geography, government and civics to our elementary classrooms. I am very thankful to have each of you on this leadership team and am so pleased to see the growth of social studies in so many of our schools. Thank you. Beth Hudson
Sign up for the Spring Book Study!
Making Sense of History by Myra Zarnowski focuses on the use of high-quality literature and hands-on experiences to build content knowledge, and is practical for all elementary grade levels. The first two segments will be online via Edmodo throughout the spring, then in May we plan to meet as a whole group. Participants who complete the book study receive 6 hours of CPE credit and their annual 6-hour GT update. Sign up for the book study on HCP, section 75905 by December 12 to receive a copy of the book as well as directions for logging onto Edmodo.
Spring Advocates Leadership Meeting -- February 4
The Spring Leadership meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 4, 3:30 - 5:00 at the Baker Center. You may enroll on HCP, section 75904; participants will be compensated for their time at the meeting. So far on the agenda we have two guest speakers, a giant book give-away (take what you want!), and a very special Grand Prize included with the door prizes. Please plan to attend.
Updated CRMs
CRMs for the third and fourth nine weeks are scheduled for posting this month and include many new and updated lessons. I appreciate and rely on your feedback when you encounter problems or have ideas for lessons, resources and other improvements. Many of the new lessons include ELA/Reading TEKS and are based on literature, fiction and non-fiction.
Summer Opportunities

Applications are now being accepted for travel and study opportunities for teachers. These include the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks in American History (scroll down to locate the one-week Landmark programs), The Gilder Lehrman Institute for American History, and for international travel, The Goethe Institute.
