I BELIEVE You Matter!!
I Believe in Being a Top 20
What is being a Top 20? Isn't it recognizing and nurturing the social emotional well-being of those around us? Testing season is upon us. This video clarifies the many efforts we take to prepare our students for the test. Thinking like a Top 20, we realize we need to think about what we are really modeling, about what we are really teaching. We must first show our students how to start, how to work through difficulties, how to discover the source of food, how to measure the journey within. Model perseverance, determination, persistence, and empathy. Press pause. What struck me in this video is the thought "Remember that in school, we get the lesson first and the test after. In life, we get the test first and the lesson after." How very true! We model character and values, compassion and emotional intelligence as a Top 20. Jay Shetty states "Life is the most difficult exam because most people are looking at someone else's desk." Your challenge this week: determine where you are looking. Do we need to adjust our focus?
To James and Amy, thank you for organizing the March Madness Book Bracket! What an engaging, interactive way to foster the love of reading and promote positive culture within our Richmond Elementary community during the craziness of March Madness! Thank you for making a difference today to create a better tomorrow!

Reading is Our Super Power!
We offer time for children to read. How do we ensure that they are actually reading, and not 'fake reading'? In the article "Putting an End to Fake Reading", Krulder suggests four strategies to truly engage readers.
1. Make time for what’s important. We value our precious teaching minutes. Every. Single. One. If reading is truly our priority, however, we set aside 10-15 minutes of choice reading time for our students. At home, we encourage reading together as a family.
2. Give students ready access to books: Updates have included ways to encourage 'Good Fit' books. Here is your opportunity to provide access to the books that students can read- and understand- independently.
3. Make reading visible: This is a fun one... enjoy reading! Take pictures of yourself reading and post them! Make charts of books you read as you finish them, and encourage children to join you!
4. Talk about books: Share your favorite books, discuss the most inspirational or inspiring part of a book you are reading, or ask questions at the end of a ten minute read.
5. Be patient and relentless: The process will be worth your investment. The love of reading and the payoffs from encouraging reading are worth your time.
