Back to School Edition!

Principal Points

With the start of the 2020-2021 school year upon us, the planning from mid-March until now has been nothing short of a roller coaster! From the excitement of bringing students back to the twists and turns the preparation process has taken, we're going to need a strong school/family partnership to ensure our school year gets off to a smooth and safe start.

The purpose of this Back-to-School newsletter is to highlight important announcements, changes, and information pertaining to the 2020-2021 school year. Some of the information in this newsletter you've seen, but most of it is likely new. We encourage you to read this in its entirety and share it with your spouse and family members to ensure we're all on the same page to start school this Fall.

If you have any questions that are not covered from the information on this newsletter or on the BPS District website, please email us at: (Principal - John Jarosh) or (Assistant Principal - Andrew Haake).

First Day of School Date Change 6TH GRADE ONLY!!!!

Wednesday, Aug. 12th, 8am-12pm

215 North 5th Street

Beatrice, NE

SCHEDULE CHANGE - August 12th, which was originally scheduled to be the first day of school for all BMS students, will now be 6TH GRADE ONLY. Due to COVID-19, the 6th graders did not get to tour or have an orientation. This change will allow our 6th graders to transition into BMS more smoothly. School will run from 8:05 - 12:00pm (lunch will NOT be served) on August 12th.

On August 13th, we will welcome ALL BMS students back to school for a full 8:05 - 3:30 school day.

Note: the Master Schedule that is on the district website will not reflect this change.

Return to School Action Plan

You can find Beatrice Public School's Return to School Action Plan HERE. Please look through the document to prepare your student(s) and family for the precautionary measures in place.

Below are some specific items to highlight for BMS, but we encourage you to read the whole document as the following list is not all encompassing:

  • Tiers

You will hear a reference to "Tiers" quite often this school year. "Tiers" represent how the school will conduct operations in relation to the current COVID risk. Tier 1 represents the lowest risk, While tier IV represents the highest risk. At the time of this newsletter publication, BMS will start school in Tier II.

  • Masks

Masks will be required for all students and staff members. In Tier II, parents may opt their student out by signing an opt out form. In Tier III, students will not be able to opt out of wearing a mask.

  • Schedules

BMS will utilize a 4 period, 90 minute, block schedule in Tier II and Tier III. This is a change from our typical 8 period, 43 minute, regular schedule. We're in the process of finalizing students schedules and will mail them first week of August.

  • Chromebooks

Students will carry Chromebooks from class to class in an effort to reduce shared equipment. If we move to Tier III or Tier IV, students may take the device home to use after parents sign the computer use agreement.

  • Water Bottles

Water fountains will be shut off. Please encourage your student to bring a CLEAR water bottle if they would need a drink throughout the day.

  • Ear Buds

In effort to reduce shared equipment, please have your student bring earphones/buds if you can. They will use them regularly in the classroom, so plan to leave them at school.

Any current 6th grader going into 7th grade next school year (2020-2021) will need a physical and current Tdap vaccine BEFORE school starts in August. Physicals and proof of vaccine are due in the nurse’s office BEFORE the first day of 7th grade. **If we do not have proof of vaccine and physical on file the first day of school, your student may be excluded from school on a medical exclusion until Tdap and/or physical is completed (per Nebraska Law (79-444) and State Stature 79-4,171;7904,117(1)(b); (2),(3).** (State policies regarding 7th grade physicals and required immunizations have NOT changed due to the COVID-19 virus.
