D.A.B. Check In, Check Out
The DAB check in, check out program will begin Monday, September 16, 2019. Remind students to check in with their mentor right after the morning announcements. Kim Miller or myself will make an announcement at 2:15 PM for students to check out with their mentors. This will allow the mentors time to do a small intervention with their student(s).
If you have students that were chosen for DAB, you should have already received a yellow D.A.B. (Demonstrating Appropriate Behavior) CICO (Check In, Check Out) folder for that student. I would like for everyone to use the same terminology for the program. Although it is a check in, check out program, I would like for it to be called DAB because I am trying to get the students to remember what D.A.B. stands for. Please refer to the program as DAB. The students have a behavior chart in their yellow folder that follows a point system. The students must meet 80% of their goal in order to receive an incentive on Friday. Please circle a number on the student’s folder every day and sign your full name. There is also a place for you to include notes if needed. I will look at each student's folder every week and try to conference with them concerning their behavior for that week. Please do not keep a student from checking in or out with their mentor as punishment or give half-points.
How do I do D.A.B.?
A student checks in with a specific mentor at the start of the school day. Ms. Adelowo or Ms. Miller gives the student a point sheet that lists the goals the student is working on each week. The mentor speaks briefly with the student, reminding them what they need to focus on or any other things to help the student work towards their goals. The idea is to encourage the student and not say negative comments or blame.
The student goes through their day with the point sheet, working on their goals and having each teacher circle how well they did on each goal on their sheet.
At the end of the day, the student checks out with the same mentor they checked in with. The mentor briefly talks with the student, asking them how they feel they did, what they did well on, and what they need to work on. The idea is to encourage the student and not make negative blaming statements.
The students then takes their point sheet home to show and discuss with their parent at the end of the week. The parent signs and discusses the point sheet with the student - what the student did well and what they need to work on. The idea is for the parent to encourage the student and not say negative or blaming comments.
The student returns the following Monday to hand in their sheet in to Ms. Adelowo or Mrs. Miller. Mrs. Miller will enter their daily points into a point tracker, and the student receives a new sheet, starting the process over.
The RTI-B team decides what the overall average point goal is for each week (e.g., 80% of the points each week). The weekly average point goals may be used along with a reward system where the student receives a reward at the end of the week for obtaining their weekly average point level. Depending on the student, you may need to start rewards for reaching the point goal on a daily basis and work up to a week, so instead of reaching 80% of their points for a week, they only need to reach 80% of their daily points for a reward.
Thanks for all that you do,
Ms. Adelowo
Substitute Folders
All teachers are expected to maintain a RED FOLDER on your desk throughout the year. This will be an emergency lesson plan folder that will be used in the event that you cannot get lesson plans here by 7:30. The RED FOLDERS should be used in emergencies only. Within this folder there should be a scripted lesson, which anyone could easily follow, for each subject you teach. Also, include the following:
class list
daily schedule including special class times and the time you and your partner teacher switch, as well as dismissal times
scheduled bathroom breaks
recess
lunch time
duty assignments (afternoon)
drill procedures
transportation list that shows how your students get home
list of students that check in with the nurse at designated times
times students are pulled from the regular classroom for interventions, special education services or speech
Substitute Folders will be checked by a member of the Core Team this week. Please make sure all components are included.

Notes from the Counselor
Mindfulness seems to be the new “buzzword” in education. Using mindfulness can benefit our students who suffer from ADHD, stress, anxiety, depression, and more. You can easily incorporate mindfulness activities into your morning routine to help start the day off with a positive light. There are eight essential benefits of mindfulness for kids. If your struggling with how to incorporate it into your classroom, click this link to see activities you can do with your students. Incorporating some of these activities could begin to help shift the mindset and atmosphere of your classroom.

News from the Librarian
Students only need to bring library books with them every other week for checkout. Students do not need to bring their books to the library when it is not their check-out week. This week is a check-out week, so students should bring their books to return or renew.
Also, please get Ms. Robinson a list of your students' AR levels so she can better help them choose books to help them test over the correct books for AR.
This website is great for readalouds if you cannot get a particular book from Ms. Robinson in the school library but you want your students to experience it. This website features celebrities or authors reading books, they are very engaging and an awesome classroom treat. Students can go to the website on their own time and choose books to listen to as well! The best part is it's absolutely free!

Flu shot permission forms will be sent home with students towards the middle of this month to make sure we get them back in plenty of time! Permission slips must be signed in order for students to receive a flu shot! Our FREE flu shot clinic will be held in the Blytheville Elementary School library October 1, 2019 from 9:00-12:00. This clinic will be open to all staff members and their spouses! Staff will receive permission forms from Nurse Russell or may fill them out when they come to receive their vaccine.
Please use the Gym entrance to enter the Nurse's office instead of using the outside door.
A note went home with students last week informing parents that the school nurse or faculty member may use topical ointments such as but not limited to triple antibiotic ointment, orajel, and lip balm. Please remind students that a parent signature is required for treatment to be provided.
