Patterns and Rules
Grade K-12
Big Ideas: Rules
Rules create structure. Students have many rules in their lives and are accustomed to rules. Rules provide organization and structure.
Big Ideas: Patterns
Patterns are repeated ideas, situations, or objects. One can predict a pattern as to what comes next.
Directions
1. Define- define the strategy using synonyms and introduce symbol.
2. Relate- Activate background knowledge by relating to ideas they already know such as block patterns or rules for entering the classroom.
3. Integrate- Use real world current events
4. Apply- link to new learning

Depth and Complexity: Rules and Patterns
When to Use
Rules are standards, authoritative directions or usual courses of action and can be used to determine the importance.
Patterns are repetitive, predictive and can be used to find cycles and can be replicated.

Strategy Variations
Rules: Use rules for descriptions, to categorize, classify, to describe, for proofreading writing, to determine fact and fiction. In math, rules can be used to determine ratios, accuracy or the rules to computation or problem solving.
Patterns: Use rules for describing, finding patterns of behavior. In math, patterns can be used for the order of operations, probability, number lines or geometric patterns. In science and social studies, patterns can be found when working with time lines, the periodic table and patterns found in historical documents.
