Pine Class News Update

Trips!
We had a great trip to Prospect Park last week. After making maps of Brooklyn and brainstorming questions about Brooklyn, the children were very attentive to their surroundings while traveling to the park.
Once we were in the park, we soaked up the beauty around us and thought about what makes Brooklyn unique.
This next week we will go way out to the Salt Marsh Nature Center and think about Brooklyn from its edge.
Bubbles of personal significance. What connects them?
Landmarks
Hard at work
Addresses with skip counting, even and odd numbers on opposite sides of the street.
Intersections, grid system.
Windows, dimension, cityscape.
Oliver enjoys the sun in perfect fall leaves and grassy comfort.
Gentle ... they get scared easily
Children from the Pine and Elm classes were excited to greet some super-sized friends.
Freedom
After lunch, the children took full advantage of having a ton of personal space.
Looking back towards the clocktower, our landmark for where Compass is located.
"Yikes! I think we're off the map!"
"You can see the Statue of Liberty!" .... "There's Lady Liberty!"
Amending our big map. It didn't have Fort Greene Park on it.
Coins
We learned about coins throughout the week. Many children are still learning to identify each coin and remember its value. Observing attributes of the coins helped us.
Monday ...
... questions to drive our observation ...

Writing
Getting intimate with nature ...
... and sharing imaginative experiences in nature with our friends ...
... inspired some poetic language about our Prospect Park trip. The teachers captured children's poetic language. Like "The trees look like legends!"
The next day, children were given these words that they uttered during their play the day before. They had the opportunity to cut out and rearrange the words using a poet's sense of rhythm and pace.
We're going to see how these leaves are affected by being pressed between the pages of a large book and being weighed down by other books during the weekend.
