e-Learning!!!
As you know, Monday, February 18 was originally scheduled off for Presidents' Day. However, Mother Nature had other plans for us. Given the number of school closings we've had recently, we are going to get creative with making this time up. At the same time, we are joining a growing number of Indiana school districts that are approved for using e-Learning Days. Your child will be staying home on Presidents' Day, but it won't be a Ferris Bueller kind of day off.
The expectation from the Indiana Department of Education is that instruction will continue in the same progression as it would on a regular school day. Realizing that there can be no substitution for face-to-face teaching, learning, and collaboration, I have tried my best to do this. I will be sending e-Learning bags with all students on Thursday, February 14, 2019. Paper copies of assignments will be in these bags. Later, you will receive an email in the format very similar to these online newsletters that contain links to paperwork and digital content. Today we practiced how to access this information in class, and the students are showing both excitement and a high level of comfort for what's to come.
Valentine's Day
Don't forget...Thursday's the big day. If your child wishes to exchange Valentines, please make sure one is brought in for every child. Those of you who've graciously volunteered to send in items for our special snack have already been sent a confirmation/reminder in the last folder.
Rice Husky Puppies
I'm going to guess that you've already heard about our rice husky puppies. After watching live video of a brand new litter of pups from an Iditarod musher's kennel, of course everyone wanted his/her own puppy. Since that wasn't possible, we decided to make our own rice and sock version to do a little husky math and descriptive writing. They are complete with a puppy birth certificate.
Husky puppies are born weighing 12-16 ounces. Since we are learning about estimation, I decided to test my students and see how close they could make their husky rice puppies weigh 16 oz (1 pound) on a scale with estimation. First, we measured out 1 ounce on a scale to see what it looked like, and feel it in our hands. From there the challenge was to see if we could first estimate, then fill our sock with exactly 16 ounces with rice. We chose a men’s sock we liked out of white, black, or gray, then used funnels to fill our sock. Students went back and forth to the scale to measure them until they reached exactly 16 ounces.
We fell in love with our puppies, and when we were all finished it was time to name our litter. Mushers have a special tradition when naming a litter of puppies in their kennels. We read a great Iditarod post on how this is done, and we talked about what our theme should be. From that theme, each student gave their puppy a unique name. Be sure to ask your child what his/her future Iditarod athlete's name is. Check out the photos below.
Temperature and Time
Speaking of math...We will be leaving money and entering other types of measurement, temperature and time. Both of these concepts have been practiced on an (almost) daily basis during our calendar time, so an in-depth study will likely not be needed. We will be focused on the following essential questions:
- How do you read a thermometer?
- How do you compare units of time measurement?
- How do you tell time to the hour and the half hour?
- How do you use the minute hand to tell time to the quarter hour?
- How do you skip count by 5's to tell time?
If your child would like additional practice or review with money concepts, I'd recommend a visit to ixl Money P.15 and P.16. Click here to get there.
Jump Rope for Heart
With the actual Jump Rope for Heart still a couple of weeks away, I encourage you to keep the momentum going. If you've not yet helped your child register online, you may do so by clicking here. Cool prizes await your child once they secure those online donations.
Yearbook Orders
Don'f forget: if you choose to order a yearbook, forms and money are due Friday, February 15
Next Week's Share Topic
On Monday of this week, we celebrate National Make a Friend Day, a wonderful opportunity to meet someone new and make a new friendship. Friends serve a very important role in everyone's lives. They are one of life's most valuable assets. Who is your best friend? What qualities does (s)he have that makes him/her such a good friend?
