Although not a household name genetically modified organisms(GMOs) are now prevalent into today's society and ultimately the existence of modified organisms is upheld by society. Despite it's minimal recognition in the United States in less developed countries such as Uganda, biotechnology engineers were able too rid the common banana, which sustains life in parts of Africa, of a harmful disease. This is only one of several instances where GMOs are progressing society(Loppato, Elizabeth).

History of GMOs
The roots of genetic engineering dates back to taming of crops. Like all organisms, farmers observed less favorable traits such as low yielding plants. To end this trend farmers bred high yielding plants with other high yielding plants to provide genes that resulted into a higher yielding harvest. This process evolved which is the product of today which works upon a DNA level. Almost all products in today's market have been modified in some way and is not nursed by nature alone. This multi-billion dollar business is controlled by biotechnology giants such as Monsanto and Sygenta to provide the public with a safe and reliable food source(Lilliston, Ben).
True Safety
Although rumors are constantly spread of the correlation of disease with GMOs these rumors are proven false by several reliable sources. For general skeptics a correlation arises that cancer is a direct result of a rise in use of GMOs however Kevin Folta, University of Florida interim chairman and associate professor of Horticultural Sciences, respectfully disagrees. He claims that 1,080 independent studies have been performed however none produced substantial evidence correlation with cancer(Lilliston). The U.S Department of Agriculture has tested GMOs several times and have found no toxic matter within these modified crops(Biotechnology Frequently Asked Questions). Ultimately the use of modified crops is certified to be consumed by humans without bodily harm.
Why Does This Matter?
Society ultimately decides on even a product withstands time or not. With the use of GMOs it can be a safe and reliable source of food and other products for our generations and for all generations of the future. However many consumers are afraid of assertions made by GMO skeptics, but these opinions are false and as consumers people should push for these products to be used worldwide without boundaries. Consumers must support these innovations by the purchasing of products to further innovate how mankind receives his food.
