The Wonderful World of Woodbury
January 2020
And Now, A Word From Our Principal...
Dear Woodbury Families!
Hard to believe that it is 2020! December was a short month with winter break, but one that brought joy and lasting memories to our little school. We had a great time celebrating the holidays with our students, making resolutions, and singing and dancing together at our annual sing along. It's always a special time of year and brings us even closer as a Woodbury Family as the holidays tend to do for so many.
It was also a time of giving for our school with many boxes of donations received for the Franklin Mall Project. Thank you for your generosity! We also fund-raised for The Open Door with our gum chewing days and raised over $200! We will be bridging those efforts together with a special visit from Open Door Residents in the near future and are so thankful that we are able to support their organization. We believe that when our students have opportunities to celebrate differences they are better prepared to challenge harmful stereotypes and also help initiate conversations about being caring, open-minded, and conscious of diversity.
December also brought us a fun trip to the Go For It Sports Dome and also our wonderful holiday play. Our students had so much fun and did an outstanding job performing. We love seeing kids come out for the play year after year! Additionally, a very warm thank you to our Woodbury PPA who treated us with lunch, gifts, and even mini-neck massages! We are grateful for their generosity. They also arranged for Santa to visit our school and set up and decorated our Woodbury Tree for the Festival of Trees.
Now that we are in mid-January, we are in our winter bench-marking period and nearing the end of the 2nd trimester. The One Book One School kickoff was a great success and enjoyed by all. We hope you enjoy some time as a family reading together and discussing A Boy Called Bat by Elana K. Arnold. Student were very excited to learn a little about skunks at our kick off and look forward to our K-5 Family Reading Night at Dummer School. On January 24th, please put on your dancing shoes and come join us at our PPA Sponsored Family Formal at Sandwich Middle School. It is sure to be a fun time!
As always, thank you for your continued support of our little school! Many blessings to you all in the New Year!
With Kindness,
Mrs. Kern

City of Sandwich Approves Truancy Ordinance
We all know optimal learning takes place when students attend school on a regular basis. When students are not in school on a regular basis and the absences are unexcused, the DeKalb County Regional Office of Education intervenes. To assist with their intervention, the City of Sandwich has approved a truancy ordinance reinforcing the importance of students attending school on a daily basis. Click here to read the truancy ordinance.

January Health Tips:
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. The flu is different from a cold. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
Fever or feeling feverish/chills (not everyone with flu will have a fever)
Cough
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle or body aches
Headaches
Fatigue (tiredness)
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults
Protect yourself and your family this season with an annual flu vaccine for everyone who is 6 months and older. Seasonal flu activity can last as late as May. Visit www.flu.gov or check out this Parent's Guide for more information.
The 3 Cs - Follow basic health hygiene practices to limit the spread of illness:
Clean - wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs
Cover - your cough or sneeze with your elbow or sleeve
Contain - students should stay home if they're sick
Students should be kept home if they have a fever greater than 100 degrees. Students should stay home for at least 24-hours after they no longer have a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines.
We also ask that when you call your student in absent, please indicate if their symptoms include a fever greater than 100 degrees, cough, or sore throat.
