Grade Level Break Down for the Week
Kindergarten-We examined the concept of books without pictures and books without text. Using The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak as our book without pictures and Jerry's Pinkney's The Lion and the Mouse as our wordless text we explored how stories can work without words and how some work without illustrations. The children also got an introduction to Aesop and what is a fable.
1st Grade-There were no first grade visits this week due to their field trip.
2nd grade-Only Ms. Biehl's class was able to visit this week due to the other classes typically coming on Thursdays and we had no school on Thursday. Ms. Biehl's class was a delightful audience as I read I Thought This was a Bear Book by Tara Lazar, a tale about an alien that accidentally lands in the wrong book and needs to be helped home by The Three Bears. We also read Leo a Ghost Story, a tale about a ghost boy who must find love and acceptance at a new home.
3rd grade- Due to not having a scheduled library time this week due to the day off, students were able to pop into the library as their schedules allowed and check out books.
4th grade-We have been fortunate to add many new books to the school library collection in the past couple months, so I booktalked new books ideal for 4th graders. They were able to create a wish list of titles they wanted to read.
5th grade-Using the book Knucklehead by Jon Scieszka we talked about the differences between biographies and memoirs and students tried their hand at writing their own memoir.
6th grade-We explored what makes a story scary and using the text More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz, I shared 1-2 short stories and then encouraged the students to write a conclusion to one of the ghost stories we read that left the reader hanging.
7th/8th grade-Continuing to use STEM principles during their time in the library, Mrs. Prithchard had the students use Knex kits to build roller coasters. Here is a photo of the fine engineering work they were doing.
