To All of the Highlander Community:
As June begins and we see the end of yet another school year, I am grateful for the way the Highlander Community came together to tackle the challenges that COVID 19 brought to all areas of our lives. I am looking forward to more “normal” celebrations like Stepping Stones and Graduation which mark the passing from grade to grade and celebrate the achievements of our students. Please make sure to check the calendar and Dojo messages for the events involving your child/children.
The search committee selected a candidate to take on the role of Superintendent as I retire, however, the transition will be a little longer than originally planned. We will be introducing the candidate after the final approval of the Board at the June Board Meeting and the transition will occur early in 2024. With that being said, I have agreed to stay on in my role in order to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.
I look forward to seeing you all at the end of the year events and to a new beginning of the 2023-2024 school year in August.
Have a Safe and Enjoyable Summer,
Mrs. Grant

For the summer reading homework, students received their Read to Succeed books. Read to Succeed was founded to encourage students to improve their reading reading skills over the summer and develop a lifelong enjoyment of reading. After reading each book, the students will take an online comprehension test through the Accelerated Reader Program (many are familiarized with the website as they have used it at school). Students who pass all six quizzes or complete a book report for each book will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship in a Read to Succeed - sponsored RI College-Bound Saver account.
We want all eligible students to take advantage of this great opportunity. If your child is having trouble completing a book and/or quiz please let me know and we can talk about other options.

The 7th Annual Pete Deal Golf Classic was a Huge Success!
Each year friends and family of Pete Deal come together for a day of golf to raise funds for a scholarship program for Highlander graduates. The funds now provide 2 graduates with $1,000 a year for up to 4 years if they maintain good standing in school. In addition, the scholarship funds supports the Global Service Learning students at Highlander as they visit Belfast, Northern Ireland. Pete had a strong belief in the power of education and community service and he also loved Ireland, and would visit often. This year we had a dedicated group of Highlander students volunteer at the event and the highlight was joining the golfers for a barbecue lunch at Swansea Country Club.

RI Builders’ Association’s pre-apprenticeship program
Highlander’s first group of students in RI Builders’ Association’s pre-apprenticeship program. They all gained OSHA 10 Certification and completed several projects while they learned skills for building trades. The grand finale was the beautiful shed that is pictured here and is part of Highlander’s Warren campus.
Boat Building
Another Year of Boatbuilding Complete!
Hereshoff Marine and Museum hosted a class of students for boatbuilding and they excelled! They built a wooden boat and launched it to celebrate their success. Boatbuilding is a high demand job in Rhode Island and we hope some students will continue on this trade path.
