HMS Update Oct./Nov. Newsletter
2020
Message from Mr. Curl
Hello HMS Families,
We'd like to recognize and thank our students for following our agreements both during In-Person and 100% Virtual Learning. By honoring and living these agreements we create an environment of civility, respect, and achievement that supports all of our learners.
I'd like to highlight agreement #4 "Give my personal best effort". Students who are living this agreement exhibit the following: completing and turning in all of their assignments, keeping their camera on during virtual lessons, asking teachers for help or clarification either directly or through emails/chats, participating in classroom or group discussions and applying their learning and ideas to their work.
Our staff is here to help all of our students achieve and do their best. As we continue to move towards the end of the trimester (November 20th) students need to be checking their Schoology courses for any missing or incomplete work. Teachers have been reaching out to remind students and families of opportunities to improve their grades and turn in late work.
Thank you,
Mr. Curl

Virtual Students - Math Workbook/Textbook Pick-Up
Our Math teachers would like all students to have access to Math workbooks (7th grade teachers also want students to have textbooks) during instruction this year. We are beginning to distribute these to our In-Person students and would like to coordinate times for Virtual students to pick these items up.
These items can be picked up on Wednesday's from 9am - 4pm, on the following days:
- Wednesday - 10/28
- Wednesday - 11/4
- Wednesday - 11/11
Our process for picking-up these items will be as follows:
- Come to the Main Entrance, use the buzzer to communicate with the main office
- Let us know who you are picking up items for so we can record it (Name and Grade)
- We will buzz you into the building so you can get the item(s) your student needs
- After getting the items, please leave out the doors labeled "Exit"
If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Burgess.

Drop Box for "Forgotten" Items
Parents - please use the secure drop box located next to our buzzer/camera system outside the school for dropping off items to your student. Please be sure to label the item!
Press the buzzer to let our secretary, Mrs. Curtis, know what you have, and then place it in the drop box. Mrs. Curtis will come out and get the items to distribute them to your student.
You can leave items such as:
- Athletic gear
- Textbooks/homework
- Lunch/money (use envelope)
- If you are dropping off a Chromebook, please notify the secretary as it should not be placed in the drop box.
Thank you!
Leader in Me Habit of the Month - Be Proactive!
You're in Charge: I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
This habit is crucial in helping our students identify that they have the power of choice. Please ask your child how they are using this habit (or talk about how they could use this habit) in their daily lives!!

HMS Student Agreements
- Act with civility and respect toward myself, my classmates and adults.
- Accept responsibility for my choices, my actions, my responses and my learning.
- Maintain a safe and clean school environment
- Give my personal best effort
Students who have Appointments during the School Day
- Option 1 - Send a note in with your student on the day of the appointment and have them bring it to the office with the time you are picking them up. Please include your signature. We will give your student a pass to come to the office 5 minutes before your scheduled pick-up time. This year you will come to our buzzer/camera system and our secretary will ask for you to show your ID. Once confirmed we will send our student out to you. If you have not arrived within 15 minutes of the scheduled time written on the note your student will be sent back to class. Then you will have to wait for us to call them back down to the office upon your arrival. It is the student's responsibility to turn in the note to the office and the pass to the teacher and to leave at the appropriate time.
- Option 2 - Come to the front door with your ID and we will call for your student to come down ready to leave for an appointment. Please be patient, this can take some time depending on which class your student is in, especially if it's lunch time or the end of the day. The best option to avoid a long wait is to use Option 1. Send a note in the morning with your student.
- Please do not text or call your student to come to the office for an appointment. As our school policy states students are not allowed cell phone usage during the school day. This also includes your student calling/texting a parent from their cell phone when they are sick. Students need to come to the main office to make phone calls home if they are needing to go home due to illness.
