BRONCHIOLITIS

The most common lung affection in children

Bronchiolitis is swelling and mucus buildup in the smallest air passages in the lungs which are called bronchioles. It is usually due to a viral infection. Bronchiolitis usually affects children under the age of 2. This affection can be sometimes severe.

Common causes are:


  • Adenovirus
  • Influenza
  • Parainfluenza
  • Respiratory syncytial virus

Risk factors


  • Being around cigarette smoke
  • Being younger than 6 months old
  • Crowded conditions
  • Not being breastfed
  • Being born before 37 weeks of pregnancy
