Understanding PTSD
You may be familiar with PTSD. You might even think you know what PTSD looks like. But do you know how to tell the difference between run-of-the-mill stress or something more serious?
It's common to have stress after experiencing or witnessing a trauma, like a car accident, natural disaster, military service, or abuse. When anxiety and distress last longer than three months after a traumatic incident and don't seem to be getting better, that may be a sign of PTSD.
There are four major symptoms associated with PTSD. Recognizing them is the first step on the road toward seeking care.
- Re-experiencing: unwanted memories, nightmares, or flashbacks
- Avoidance: pouring oneself into work, alcohol or other substances to forget
- Feeling worse about yourself or the world: experiencing extreme guilt or unhappiness, even around those you love
- Hyperarousal: sudden bursts of anger or panic
There are lots of treatment options to manage PTSD, from traditional methods like counseling and medication to alternative solutions like yoga, mindfulness, acupuncture, and meditation. There are also specific resources and networks for veterans and survivors of sexual assault
Just remember, no one has to go through this alone.
Bring in the New Year with More Greens!
1. Start with the greens — they're super-foods! This forms the base of your salad, so make it a nutritious one. Five cups of leafy greens, including cruciferous veggies, adds a powerful nutritional punch to your meal.
2. Add lots of color. Green, red, and yellow peppers, as well as tomatoes, berries, and other colorful foods owe their brilliant hues to flavonoids and carotenoids, which are phytochemicals that help defend the body’s tissues against oxidative damage.
3. Don’t forget the onions. Onions, and other members of the allium family, make everything taste better with their unique flavor profiles. But their most important benefit lies in the anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of their sulfide compounds – yes, the same ones that make your eyes water.
4. Toss in some beans. There’s something magical about beans. Not only do they add a satisfying note of starchy creaminess to a salad — beans contain soluble and insoluble fiber and lots of resistant starch. They have anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties.
5. Dress it for success. Before you dig in to that heaping bowl of fresh vegetables, remember to add in some healthy fats, which will help you absorb the micronutrients in the salad. Eating a healthful dressing that contains nuts and seeds helps dieters feel satiated and reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Current Research - Mindfulness Is More Effective Than Drugs For Both Anxiety and Depression
Mindfulness is “the intentional, accepting and non-judgemental focus of one’s attention on the emotions, thoughts and sensations occurring in the present moment”, which can be trained by a large extent in meditational practices.
The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published the results of a ground-breaking study that found that meditation appears to provide as much relief from some anxiety and depression symptoms as antidepressants.
Mindfulness-based trainings have shown beneficial effects on inflammatory disorders in prior clinical studies and are endorsed by the American Heart Association as a preventative intervention. The training provides a biological mechanism for therapeutic effects.
A study in Psychoneuroendocrinology by researchers in Wisconsin, Spain, and France reported the first evidence of specific molecular changes in the body following a period of intensive mindfulness practice.
“In the group work that I’ve done with sufferers of anxiety or depression, I’ve found it very beneficial because it calms the mind. It’s not a new thing,” she adds.
That’s an understatement: Mindfulness is a meditation technique that has been advocated by Buddhism for 2,500 years. Paul Christelis, the Light Centre’s course leader and a clinical psychologist, defines it as “paying attention to your experience, on purpose, in the present moment, without judgment or criticism.”
Its crossover into Western culture has been gradual. But in 2004, its use in preventing the relapse of depression was approved by the U.K.’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice). It has rapidly gained traction since.
