It separates the central Outer Banks from Roanoke Island.

The importance of estuaries

Estuaries are important in several ways. They supply economic, cultural and ecological benefits to communities. Also, they deliver fundamental life-support processes upon which all organisms depend.

Plants and Animals

Some of the animals are shellfish, oysters, blue crabs, grass shrimp, and clams. Some of the plants are the black needlerush, and cordgrasses.
