Definition:
Anorexia can also be called anorexia nervosa and is a mental health disease. Anorexia causes the person to over diet and lose lots of weight.
Famous Anorexics:
- Karen Carpenter was a famous singer, and she died at the age of 32.
- Erika Goodman was a famous fashion model, and she died at the age of 18.
- Heidi Guenther was a famous ballerina, and she died at the age of 22.
Causes:
There is no real cause. Some researchers say it might be caused because of biological, genetic, and environmental factors.
Symptoms:
The person's personality might change to being moody and withdrawn. Some more extreme symptoms are dry and brittle hair that will fall out.
Age/Gender Tendencies:
Females have a greater tendency to get anorexia. The age tendencies are between 11 and 20 years of age.
Background:
Anorexia is considered to have the highest death rate of all the mental illnesses. Anorexia is more common in Western countries in the world. Anorexics can only think about looking thin, and they are continually fearful of gaining any weight. Many anorexics eat less than 500 calories per day. This can cause the anorexic to lose a lot of bone mass their body needs.
Treatments and/or Medications:
People that have anorexia can be helped with psychotherapy, medical care, and nutrition counseling. Hospitalization can also help or treat the anorexic. This disease takes a lifelong process in order to treat.
