Are You Smarter Than a Librarian?
Fifth grade students participated in a three- part lesson about how materials are organized in the library. After we read The Great Dewey Hunt by Toni Buzzeo, students made Dewey Bookmarks with the categories on them. On their second library visit, I paired students up with a partner and sent them on a Library Scavenger Hunt. The teams competed against each other to see who could locate all the items the quickest. Finally, on their third library visit, we played Are You Smarter Than a Librarian? Students were put in groups of 4-5. Each team had a stack of books on their table. They had to shelve the books correctly and then sit down at their table to wait for me to check their work. These lessons were a lot of fun and helped the students become more familiar with the location of library materials. The hands-on practice gave them more confidence about their knowledge of library organization.

Genre Book Tasting
A book tasting was held for several classes at Stanley Middle. Students spent five minutes at each of six different tables “tasting” books from the following genres: Fantasy, Biography, Nonfiction, Historical Fiction, Mystery, and Graphic Novels. Each table was decorated with tablecloths, flameless tea lights, menus, and a platter for the books. Students answered questions about their opinions of the books they tasted, gave each book a rating, and wrote a short reflection at the end of the activity.
Student comments:
“It was interesting to read all the different genres. I liked getting to read all the different books. I did like the nonfiction book, I didn’t expect to like. It was fun reading all the new books & getting to explore all the genres.”
“ I enjoyed reading books I did not expect to like. The book tasting was a very neat and fun idea. I enjoyed this very much. The surprising part is one of the genres I expected I wouldn’t like. I was actually fascinated by the way they were telling the story of themselves and their lives. All in all, very nice thing.”Pop-up Library at East Gaston
East Gaston media students ran a pop-up library in the school's commons area during lunches prior to the holiday break. Busy students and staff were able to easily and quickly find good books and magazines to read over their vacation.
