About Hawaii!
Hawaii
Hawaii is called the Aloha State. When you think of Hawaii, you would probably think of small cottages and huts made of wood and leaves. But Hawaii is like other states. It has city's that look like normal city's. It isn't very different from anywhere else. Hawaii is the newest state in the united states. It became an official state in 1959. It is located in the Pacific ocean. It has eight islands which are called: Kauai, Kaho'olawe, Ni'ihau, Oahu, Lana'i, Molokai, Maui, and the last one is called Hawaii. Hawaii's capital, Honolulu, is located on the island Oahu. The language spoken there is mostly English. But some Hawaiians speak Polynesian (mostly known as Hawaiian.)
Foods in Hawaii
Hawaiians eat lots of vegetables and fruits. They also eat a lot of sea food. They eat birds and pigs. Hawaiians have a lot of very good looking foods. One of the most famous foods is called poi. Poi is a sauce like food made out of the roots of a plant called taro.
weather of Hawaii
Hawaii's weather is very warm. There are really only two seasons in Hawaii, summer and winter, in other words Kua (summer) and hooilo (winter). In the summer, the average temperature is between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Hawaii's winters are very warm. I'm a little jealous at how warm it is. The winter temperature averages around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Seeing how it is so warm, you would think there is no snow. But that's where you are wrong. The mountains in Hawaii are high enough to get snow. But it usually only lasts a few days.
geography of Hawaii
Hawaii is located in the pacific ocean about 2400 miles away from the continental United States. Hawaii covers 6,459 square miles. It is the 4th smallest state. It is bigger than Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island. It is the longest chain of islands in the world. 6,423 square miles of Hawaii is all land. 36 square miles is occupied by water. The highest point of Hawaii rises up to about 13,800 feet into the sky. This is the mountain Mauna Kea located on the island Hawaii. The lowest point of Hawaii is sea level.
famous landmarks (diamond head)
The most popular landmark in Hawaii is diamond head. It is located on the island of Oahu near Honolulu. Diamond head is a volcano. Now don't worry, its dead, meaning it won't explode. Its original name was Leahi. Leahi means tuna fishes brow. It is called this because from far away, it sort of looks like a fish fin.
famous landmarks (USS Arizona)
Another tour site in Hawaii is the USS Arizona. The USS Arizona was one of the boats that was bombed during the siege of Pearl Harbor. The boat now lays sunken under water near the coast of Honolulu Hawaii.
historical events (pearl harbor)
I'm sure most everyone has heard about the attack on Pearl Harbor. But do you know where it took place? That's something I didn't know. It took place in Hawaii on the morning of December 7, 1941 in Pearl Harbor which is on the island of Oahu. It was a surprise attack by the Japanese. This attack is what caused the Americans to join in World War II.
Animals in Hawaii
Some of the animals that live in Hawaii are: kangaroos, lizards and monkeys. Also natural jungle animals live in Hawaii. There are a lot of unique birds that live in Hawaii. It is home to more than 200 different types of native fish. There are more than 10,000 different native insects.
Hawaiian symbols
Hawaiian tree
Hawaii's tree is called the Kukui. It is also called the Candlenut tree. It is a symbol of peace, protection and enlightenment. The fruit is poisonous, but it can be prepared to be a food source. It is also used as a medical treatment. It got its name as the Candlenut because the fruit contains a flammable oil, and it burns like a candle. It grows best in moist ground. It has small white flowers on it.
Hawaiian flag
The Hawaiian flag has eight stripes of which are red, white and blue. Each stripe represents one of the islands of Hawaii. In the corner is the British Jack. The British Jack is there because Hawaii used to be under the protection of England, and King Kamehameha's advisers were British.
Hawaiian flower
The Hawaiian flower is called Pua Aloalo or, yellow hibiscus and became the flower in 1988. It is also known as "ma`O-hau-hele". The yellow hibiscus is usually yellow, of course, but is sometimes red and a couple of other colors. Sometimes it can be multi-colored.
Hawaiian bird
The Nene bird, or Hawaiian goose is Hawaii's bird. It was officially dedicated in 1957. The Nene is not bothered by any other animals. It has warm feathers so it doesn't get cold. They don't fly much because their wings are weak. It is not as good a swimmer as other geese because their feet are only half as webbed. They have longer toes to climb the rocky Hawaiian surface. Sadly, this bird is endangered.
State song
The state song is originally in a different language. This is just the translation. The song is called "Hawaiì i pono 'î"
Verse 1:
Hawaii's own true sons
Be loyal to your chief
Your country's liege and lord
The chief

Royal father
Kamehameha
Shall defend in war
With spears

Hawaii's own true sons
Look to your chief
Those chiefs of younger birth
Younger descent

People of loyal heart
The only duty lies
