Message from Superintendent Murley about online safety
Good afternoon families,
We would like to bring awareness to a host of Internet hoaxes and threats that continue to make the rounds across the nation, including the most recent "Momo challenge" now receiving coverage. The Momo Challenge—which some are referring to as a social media/online/gaming hoax—attempts to encourage self harm and suicide and presents itself through common games and videos (including animation) that children of all ages are viewing. While the reports are not fully substantiated, we believe it is important to pass along this information in order for families to be aware of the topic.
We encourage you to continue having discussions with your children about safe digital practices when using social media and online gaming. You are welcome to review the following resources for more information. You are also encouraged to contact your school counselor if your child has concerns with anything they may be experiencing online. Our priority is to ensure all students remain safe, not only in our buildings, but online as well. We thank you for your partnership at home.
Don't Panic, What Parents Really Need To Know About 'Momo Challenge'
Common Sense Media (helpful resources for families)
The National Online Safety panel gives the following recommendations:
1. Tell them it’s not real.
2. Be present when they are on the internet.
3. Talk regularly with your child.
4. Use device settings and parental controls.
5. Talk to your child about peer pressure.
6. Report and block when you see this on your child’s screen.
7. Warn your children about talking to strangers in real life and online.
