READ ACROSS AMERICA at Sussex

In May of 1997, a small reading task force at the National Education Association (NEA) came up with a big idea. The group decided to create a day to celebrate reading. They thought, "We hold pep rallies to get kids excited about football. We assemble to remember that Character Counts. Why don't we do something to get kids excited about reading?" That is how NEA's Read Across America came to be. And so was born on March 2, 1998, the largest celebration of reading this country has ever seen. We invite all to participate in the celebration of reading during Spirit Week beginning February 25th- March 1st.

Happy Reading!!

Wellness Corner

Strep throat is on the rise in schools (tis the season). If your child is diagnosed with strep throat, they will need to stay home until they are fever-free (without fever-reducing medications) AND have been on antibiotics for a full 24 hours. Attached is a link from the CDC website with everything you need to know about it:

Social Media and Conflict Resolution

Recently there has been an increase in students turning to social media when conflicts arise. Students are using Instagram Direct Messaging, this is similar to group chats, and Facebook Messenger, to discuss conflicts that are occurring with them and their peer group.

I encourage all parents to be updated of which social media apps your students are using and the nuances they possess (deleting after sent, Live's, etc) and to continue the dialogue with your children about appropriate use of social media.

Below are some interesting articles and videos on the impact of social media and our youngsters.
