Parent Advisory Council
Once a month, except for January, our Advisory Council gathers for the purpose of advising administration on items like the budget, implementation of programs, evaluation/modifications of the Continuous Improvement Plan. The bylaws were updated last spring to include representations from our neighborhoods and they are looking at adding members to be a part of this important parent group. Meetings are typically the first Tuesday of each month starting at 6:30pm. Childcare is available for school-aged children until 7:30pm (when meetings are scheduled to end). There is a time in the agenda for citizens' time.
You can find more information about previous meetings, contact information, etc. through this link: https://haymarketes.pwcs.edu/parent_engagement/advisory_council

Guidance at a Glance
Our classroom guidance lessons are in full swing! Kindergarten, first and second graders have been learning about and practicing self-control skills, following the rules, and the differences between big problems and small problems. Third, fourth and fifth graders have been learning about growth mindset and the power of YET. Fifth graders have also been learning in detail about our amazing and complex brains, and the different parts of the brain that impact our feelings and decisions.
As we head into the holiday season, we want to equip families with some practical tips for helping your students manage stress or anxiety during what can be a very different and busy few weeks. There are many things to look forward to about the holiday break, but the change in routine can significantly affect children. The following tips can benefit both parents and students alike!
- Manage your own stress. Take care of yourself by getting enough rest and setting aside time to care for yourself.
- As much as possible, keep routines the same. This is particularly true for sleep and mealtimes.
Manage expectations—whether that be gift-giving, family gatherings, or exciting activities, let children know a reasonable level of information about what they can expect. This may be particularly key if your family holidays this year look different from last year.
Keep kids active, whether indoors or outdoors!
Spend some time together as a family. This can be hard in the midst of visits to extended family or friends and holiday gatherings but can help reassure children of stability.
Build some family holiday traditions or continue traditions you’ve done before.
Choose something to do as a family that helps others. Baking cookies for neighbors, donating toys for a toy drive, or simply writing encouraging notes to other family or friends helps keep the perspective on the holidays beyond presents and parties.

• Provide procedures for the reporting, investigation, and resolution of student complaints of discrimination or harassment based upon disability, which were revised by the School Division in April of 2016 and are contained in Regulation 738-1, “Complaint Procedures for Student Claims of Discrimination or Harassment.”
