Novel Summary
In the novel, Divergent, by Veronica Roth, the main character, Tris, lives in a faction called abnegation but that soon changes because she is sixteen years old. The dystopian society that she lives in has a rule that when a teenager becomes sixteen it is time to decide their destiny in the future. Tris moves from Abgnegation to Dauntless and people and herself soon find out that she is Divergent. Divergent means not fitting into a certain faction and being able to conquer alot of obstacles that others can't.
Abnegation
To refuse or deny one's self; selfless
Amity
Friendship; peaceful harmony
Candor
The state or quality of being open or frank with opinion or knowledge.
Dauntless
Fearless or undaunted.
Erudite
Characterized by great knowledge; learned or scholarly.
What purpose does each five factions serve in society?
Abnegation's are the leaders of each society and give to those who are factionless. Amity are farmers. Candor are lawyers or people who work in the judicial field. Daunltess are considered to be "police" or "patrol" of a faction. Erudite serves as teachers because of their knowledge.
What personality types are drawn towards each faction?
Abnegations are selfless, amity are peaceful, candor are open and blunt, dauntless are fearless, and erudite are intelligent.
Do you think these factions represent every basic personality type and fulfill all the basic needs of people? If not what factions would you create to fill these gaps?
I don't think the factions fulfill every basic personality. I would make a faction for those who are very outgoing, the "life of the party" so to speak. I would also make a faction for those who are scared of trying new things and are unable to be around others who aren't like them. The last would be called enclosed for those who are very shy.
What was the reason behind the creation of the factions?
The factions were created to reduce conflict and other oppositions. Fearless people and farmers don't really mix well together.
Do you think the factions are working "toward a better society and a better world" as they say they are? What about the structure that seems to be working for Tris's society? What doesn't seem to be working at all?
I think yes and no for the question of whether or not the factions are working towards a better society. Yes because there is less conflict, but no because too many of the same "hard headed" people in one area won't accomplish anything. Without new ideas and exploration life could become very boring. The structure is working in Tris's society because they have some sense of knowledge but they aren't greedy. For a government to succeed they need to give back to the area that they are in charge of. What doesn't seem to be working is Dauntless. Dauntless leader, Eric, seems too extreme and too into what he's doing. Putting someone's lives in danger is not a solution in becoming into a faction.
