Second Grade Newsletter
January 2020
Happy New Year!
We hope you enjoyed the holiday break and were able to spend time with family and resting up for the second half of the school year. We are looking forward to spending the month of January diving deeper into topics and building understanding of January’s units of study.
Winter is in full swing! Although it can be very cold on days, we will try to go out almost daily to get some fresh air. Please encourage your child to wear hats and gloves in order to be comfortable during our time outside. In addition, runny noses are becoming more common. Due to this, tissues tend to run out faster during the cold months. We always appreciate it when tissues are donated to our classrooms. Thank you again for any tissues that you can spare.
Language Arts
In word study or foundational skills, students will be working on decoding and writing words with the hard and soft c and g sound along with vowel diphthongs like the sounds of oo and doubling the final consonant before adding the suffix ed.
In writing, students will be finishing up the informational writing unit. They will be "publishing" their informational report on a topic of their choice. They will expertly share their knowledge through the use of text and text features such as headings, bold words and pictures.
Math
During the month of January, we will start our sixth unit in Math. This unit focuses mainly on different types of measurement. By the end of the unit, students will be able to explore and use appropriate measuring tools to estimate and measure the length of objects in both inches and feet to compare the differences in lengths with the same unit. Students will also use real-life situations involving lengths in inches and feet to build on their conceptual understanding with finding length differences through addition and subtraction (within 100). Lastly, students will tell and write time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analog and digital clock, using am and pm. Please encourage “math discussion” by asking your child to explain their thinking as they solve a problem.
Daily classroom routines such as Number Talks provide effective strategies for increasing computational fluency. Using number relationships and the structures of numbers to add and subtract develops meaningful practice for students. Consistent practice = stronger fact fluency. Please encourage your child to regularly practice each week
Science
Odd and Ends
Please remember to have your child read everyday. If you need help finding books that are appropriate for your child's level, please let us know. Please have the students practice their basic math facts as well.
As always, if you have concerns or questions, please contact your child's teacher as a first step. Together we can work to problem solve. Thank you for your continued support!
