Basic Academy Reopening Newsletter
August 5, 2020
General Information
Hello Wolves and Families,
Today marked the first day our staff returned to work. We are off and running with professional development and creating structures to best meet the needs of our students and provide a quality virtual environment prior to our students' first day on August 24th. With that said, we understand that this is a new environment for our students, family, and our staff. I can tell you however, that our staff is committed to putting forth its best effort. Along the way we must be supportive, understanding, and patient.
I understand that there are many questions and anxieties that our students and families may have. We too, have anxieties and questions, and some of these answers will come as we move along and begin to apply our structures and procedures. Below I will provide as much information as I can based on the information I currently have. Stay tuned for more updates as you can expect this newsletter each Wednesday night to provide updates and information.
We are all in this together and are excited to begin to interact with our students.

Technology Needs
It is the goal of the District and of Basic Academy to ensure the needs of our student are met in regards to technology devices. Our survey produced 1,876 responses with about 50% needing a device. We have scheduled a deployment of devices for those who expressed need and their appointments have been shared. Should you be in need of a device and have not filled out the survey or contacted the school, we ask that you please do so. You may also call 702-799-8000 ext. 4500 for assistance.
Student Schedules
Since the Board approved the High School schedule to run year long. We have been working on our Master Schedule to ensure students are enrolled in their courses and our counselors are currently working on student schedules. Should there be any concerns or conflicts in a student's schedule you will be contacted by the counselor. Student schedules will be released prior to the first day of their return.
Bell Schedule
Below you will find our Bell Schedule that aligns and meets District Guidelines. Should there be any adjustments to the schedule, we will notify the community, however, we do not anticipate any changes.
Live instruction: Teachers will be live via our learning platform to execute instruction. All students are required to attend live instruction.
Differentiated Learning and Extended Learning: This time slot is intended for students to work independently and extend their learning from live instruction. During this time students will have the opportunity to receive differentiated or additional support to supplement the live instruction.
Asynchronous Learning/Virtual Hours: During this time students are working offline independently and all faculty members are available to students for assistance and support.
Advisory Periods: This period is utilized to check-in with all of our students on their progress from the start of the week and may be utilized to set the stage for the remainder of the week and leading into the start of the following week. At the start of the year this time may be spent on orienting our students to the learning management system and gathering feedback on student needs.
Student Orientation (Freshman New to Basic Academy)
Basic Academy is currently planning a virtual orientation for incoming Freshman and students new to Basic Academy. Stay tuned for dates and time.

Takeaways
Accepting and Adapting
This school year will be challenging for all of us as we cope with accepting and adapting to the new environment of virtual learning. We are two weeks away from our first day of school and have quickly accepted our role as an institution and are adapting to provide an environment of learning for our students. Our overall success will involve our families and students as you too will be and have been asked to accept and adapt to our new environment. The book "Who Moved My Cheese?" illustrates how when you come to "terms" or "accept" the change, you can discover for yourself how to deal with change (adapt), so that you can enjoy less stress and more success. This pandemic has definitely "moved our cheese" in more ways than one and in some cases has taken the cheese. If we focus on what we can control, then even though our cheese gets moved, we can still see it and know it is there. I'm confident in our school community and that we will succeed and work together.
