The Parsons Happenings

Big picture

Please use the COVID-19 Morning Checklist to help reduce the spread of Covid-19. Please continue to follow the guidelines each morning when sending your 'in person' student to school. We have seen a slight increase of cases in Gwinnett and we want to make sure we are ALL doing our part.

Each school in our district has a trained Health Response Team (HRT Team). If a suspected case of Covid is reported at our school, this team follows set guidelines. Please be assured that you will be contacted by an HRT member if your child has been identified as 'close contact' to someone in our school who has tested positive for Covid-19.

The most important thing we can do is continue to wear our masks, practice social distancing, and wash hands regularly. We are #STRONGERTOGETHER when we all do our part.

Parsons Cubs,

Our PTA is excited that October is Bullying Prevention Month. Do you know what bully behavior is? Bully behavior is when someone is being hurt either by words or actions on purpose, usually more than once, feels bad because of it, and has a hard time stopping what is happening to them. We want each of our Parsons Cubs to be a kid against bully behavior.

So we are asking each of you to take one or both of our Stop Bullying Challenges.

Challenge #1 - Answer a question about bully behavior that will be placed on our Unity Tree. This week’s question is, how can you support a friend/peer who is being bullied?

Challenge #2 - Watch a Brainpop video about bullying, take the quiz for that video, and then go to a website to confirm you took the video (see flyer attached for details).

The challenges will be in our Parsons newsletters every Friday. So ask your parents to help you sign up for the challenges and submit your response. We will be giving out some really cool prizes every Friday, so be sure to take the challenge by Wednesday of each week.

Thanks for being a Parsons Cub against bully behavior!

Student Engagement Survey: Grades 3-5

The Student Engagement Instrument (SEI) is a survey used to measure how engaged students are at school and with learning. When taking the SEI, students respond to items that cover a variety of topics related to their engagement in their education, including the level of support they receive from teachers, peers, and family, as well as their perceptions of school work and future educational goals. We measure student engagement in GCPS because it is related to important outcomes such as on-time graduation and postsecondary success.

This year's survey will provide us with current data but it will also allow us to compare student engagement from this year to last year. Our students in grades 3-5, digital and in person, will be completing the survey in the upcoming weeks with their teacher.

*Last year's average Student Engagement Instrument Composite Score for Parsons ES was 4.25, which was higher than the GCPS average of 4.24.

Instructional Resource Public Review

Staff, parents, and Gwinnett community members are invited to provide input on proposed instructional resources for select courses in Language Arts, Social Studies, Career and Technical Education, and Foreign Language, conducted as a virtual review Oct. 1 through Oct. 31. Before adopting instructional resources for classroom use, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) undergoes an extensive selection process. The division of curriculum and instructional support convened multiple committees involving various stakeholder groups to select resources to consider for adoption. The resources were reviewed for alignment with the school system’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum as well as strength of instructional strategies, freedom from sensitivity or bias, and diverse representation. As a part of the full selection process, resources are piloted in GCPS classrooms. Data from the public review and pilots will be considered in making adoption recommendations to the Board of Education in early 2021. To begin the public review, please visit this link. For more about the instructional resources review process, contact the Office of Instructional Resources and Support, at 678-301-6828.

Important Reminders for Online Learners

In order for our students to have a successful digital learning experiences, please ensure the following things:
  • It is an expectation that all digital students attend all classroom Zoom meetings.
  • Digital Learners should follow the Digital Lesson Plans for each day, complete all assignments, and submit the assignments on time for each lesson.
  • Students should have their cameras turned on when possible. This is very helpful to the teacher and helps build a classroom community.
  • Active participation in all Zoom lessons helps students actively learn.
  • Please follow the daily schedule on the Digital Lesson Plan for each day.
  • Please be on time for all Zoom Meetings.
  • Sometimes, especially for our younger students, parents or caregivers may need to assist our younger students with sticking to the schedule and submitting/uploading assignments.
Thank you in advance for helping your child be a successful online learner!
