A MINUTE WITH DR. MAXWELL
Dear East Family,
Our number one priority is to keep your children safe; therefore we are always working on ways to continuously improve.
Each school year we review our emergency drills at least three times. The emergency drills that we practice are; fire, earthquake, tornado, and intruder. We participated in the Great Central U.S. Shake Out on October 17th at 10:17 AM and plan to partake in a State-wide Tornado Drill in early spring. Both of these are in addition to the other scheduled drills. With these drills, our students and staff are well informed on the procedures to follow in emergency situations.
Our teachers and staff members have received training on intruder response. We work with our local authorities on simulated response situations specific to our building as well. Role playing scenarios offer hands on, valuable learning experiences.
Response to a major emergency is also included in safety plans for teachers and staff. We held an emergency simulation on Monday, October 14th. This allowed our safety teams (first aid, search and rescue, assembly area, site safety, extended care, and command) to experience procedures and will teach students how to assemble in such an event.
If you have any questions regarding safety procedures, please feel free to call or visit with me any time.
Enjoy your November!

THE BUZZ WITH MRS. BROOKE
Wow, October has flown by! We started the month with our Field Trips to Knowlan Family Farms and our adventures in apple picking and exploring. The students loved getting their apples and eating them for a snack!
We have continued our school Families this month where we meet in smaller groups with a teacher or administrator in our building and talk about how to be a wonderful student in our school. This month we discussed DisAbility awareness. We were able to travel in our families to different areas in our Early Childhood Center to explore what it might be like to experience things differently.
Barney the bus also paid us a visit and the students loved watching him zoom in the room, make jokes, and sing songs with us. He spoke to us about how to be safe if we ride the bus and we loved interacting with the lovely ladies and gentlemen from our transportation department in our school district.
We wrapped up this month with a fantastic day of both trick or treating and partying with our families and classmates. It was such a treat to have our students parade through the halls in our Early Childhood center and have short conversations with our administrators and supporters of our Early Childhood program. The parties were a hit as well. Our classrooms were busy and full of fun activities and special treats.
All of these events have been enjoyable and it has been great to share so many of these memories with our families, teachers, and classmates!
As a side note, please remember to label your children’s belongings! As it gets colder and the students bring more items from home, we don’t want them to lose any of their belongings. Lastly, if you have any clothes that you no longer need that may fit our 3 year olds and 4 year olds we always welcome items for our students to change into if there is an accident. Thank you for supporting our program!

MRS. MOYERS' MESSAGE
“Is success about learning - or proving you’re smart?”
That’s the question Dr. Carol S. Dweck sets out to answer in her research into mindsets. What she has found is that people who believe a person’s intelligence and abilities are fixed traits have what is referred to as a “fixed mindset”, and those who believe that intelligence and abilities can be be expanded on and developed through hard work and continuous learning have what is called a “growth mindset”. Click this link to watch a short video that describes the impact each of the mindsets can have on student achievement.
Having watched the video several years ago and then reading Dr. Dweck’s book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, I recognize that when I was growing up, I very much had a fixed mindset. It affected my approach to everything - school, sports, and extracurricular activies such as learning to play the piano. The thought of looking less than “the best” kept me from pushing myself to reach my full potential in all of those area because of my fear of making a mistake, which in my mind was “failing”.
Now, some of my favorite things to say to students are, “I love mistakes. They give us the best chance to learn!” and “Part of life is making mistakes and learning from them.” And I believe those things to be true. Now, I make sure to recognize the effort a person gives over the end result. I help students add “yet” to the end of a sentence stating what they “can’t do.” You can help foster a growth mindset in your student by recoginizing his effort, encouraging her to try again, and help him realize that learning never stops!
ARTSONIA
I'm finally back from maternity leave and have started putting your kiddos artwork on Artsonia. If you are new to our school, Artsonia is a website that I upload your child's artwork to so you and your family members can see it as soon as they make it. Something else that is so cool is you can BUY items (mugs, note cards, jewelry, etc) with your child's artwork on it. What a perfect gift idea just in time for the holiday season! Bonus!!!! Our school gets 15% of what you spend on their website. Last year we made over $1,000 to be used for student enrichment. AMAZING!!! You should have received an email asking if you want to sign up a few weeks ago, but if you deleted it or if you need a new email sent so you can sign up, please let me know! Thank you for your support!!

NEWS FROM THE NURSES
Staying Healthy!!
It is very important to remind your child/children to wash their hands frequently and cough into their elbows. Make sure your child/children are getting plenty of sleep and staying hydrated with water (don’t forget to wash your child’s water bottle daily with hot water and soap if they are using one from home). Please remember to keep your child home until they are 24 hours free of vomiting, diarrhea, and/or fever (for fever they need to be 24 hours free of fever without the use of medication like tylenol/motrin). Thank you for your attention to this matter!!! We want everyone to stay healthy (we don't want to spread the sickness)!!!!!
We are still in need of extra girl's and boy's pants in all sizes. Sweat pants and pants with an elastic waistline are appreciated!

TALK TO YOUR CHILD
One way that children learn language is by hearing it over and over. Your child will listen to you talk and use you as a model.
Parallel Talk = talking about what your child is doing as it happens. Describe your child’s actions, feelings, and playthings (ex. “You’re excited because we’re going to the park”).
Self-Talk = telling your child about what you are doing, seeing, or feeling at the time you are doing it. Self-talk will show your child by example how to put words together. (ex. “Wet clothes. Hang them up.” or “I’m washing the car. It sure is dirty. Let’s start with the roof.”).
Labeling = name objects, actions, and feelings. Give your child new words for your surroundings and activities to help build vocabulary. (ex. “Look, ball. Ball bounce, bounce. It’s fun.”).
