Health Science Program of Study
Focuses on planning, managing, and providing therapeutic services, diagnostics services, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development. To pursue a career in the health science industry, students should learn to reason, think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and communicate effectively. Students should recognize that quality health care depends on the ability to work well with others.
Students are required to take class within their cluster in sequence. Students earn endorsement after completing 4 classes in coherent sequence.
Principles of Health Science
Level 1
The Principles of Health Science course is designed to provide an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development systems of the health care industry.
Medical Terminology
Level 2
The Medical Terminology course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, singular and plural forms, and medical abbreviations. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.
Health Science Theory
Level 3
The Health Science Theory course is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers. Students will employ hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development.
Anatomy & Physiology
Level 4
The Anatomy and Physiology course is designed for students to conduct laboratory and field investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. Students in Anatomy and Physiology will study a variety of topics, including the structure and function of the human body and the interaction of body systems for maintaining homeostasis.
Anatomy & Physiology is an honors class and requires students to participate in the Advanced Academic hours.
Practicum of Health Science
The Practicum in Health Science course is designed to give students practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills. Practicum experiences can occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experience.
This class is in partnership with SWTJC and offers the student college credit for the courses completed. Students will need to complete SWTJC application.
There are 3 different options for students to choose.
Practicum/ Certified Nurse's Assistant
Students in this class will have the opportunity to earn a Certified Nurse Assistant certification.
Practicum/Certified Medical Assistant
Students in this class will have the opportunity to earn a certification as a medical assistant.
Practicum/ EKG/Phlebotomy Certification
Students in this class will have the opportunity to earn certifications as an EKG technician and Phlebotomist.
This is a 2 hour blocked class.
