SCHOOL VALUE THIS TERM: 'TO BE INCLUSIVE'

These values were chosen by the staff, learners and community of Vogeltown School in 2019.
This term we are focusing on being 'Kind'.
To be 'inclusive' and welcoming to all our new Vogeltown learners is the 'Vogeltown Way'. We show 'inclusiveness' as part of our school vision of Manaaki Tangata - Caring for the people.
Being a 'Vogeltowner' is being a good citizen of our community - someone who is inclusive, respectful, original, courageous and kind.
SCHOOL GOAL: 'TO BE INCLUSIVE'
WHAT: WELCOME BACK TO 2022 – To treat everyone the same, our VS family! Be INCLUSIVE!
WHY:
We are a welcoming school and we want all learners and whanau to feel safe and happy here
Being an ‘inclusive’ learner you show the school vision of ‘Caring of the people’ - Manāki tangata
Vogeltown is one big ‘whanau’ and we welcome & involve all people to our family – being ‘inclusive’
HOW:
By being a ‘Vogeltowner’ you show ‘inclusiveness’ by involving everyone - regardless of creed, race or gender.
By involving anyone in your group - whether it be a game, a class task, sitting together at lunch
By supporting other people and accepting everyone has differences - being collaborative
By being a positive Vogeltown citizen - keeping a positive attitude when working with others
SIGNS OF SUCCESS:
You can work collaboratively and positively with other people
You are welcoming and accept people into your game, group or task
You can support others - making sure everyone feels included in your group, class and school
You are a ‘Vogeltowner’ showing inclusiveness and Manāki tangata
You have respect for the feelings and well being of others
TE REO FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
KIA ORA VS WHANAU, FROM MR O
We enter the year in the new 'Covid traffic light system' and unfortunately we begin in the 'Red Light setting'. The red light setting is very similar to the levels we were in last year, so you will all be familiar with the protocols and rules we operate under. I have attached a separate part of the newsletter with our school safety measures at red light setting - see below.
It has been an amazing first week of the school year with happy faces everywhere! It is so good to have our Vogeltown family back together and we have welcomed 26 new learners and their families to Vogeltown as well this week. The amazing summer weather over the holidays has continued in to this first week, and that has certainly helped with the positive vibes around the school sites!
Term 1 is shaping up to be a very busy term full of great activities! We hope we can complete as many of these activities as we can under the 'Covid Red light settings - we will keep you all in the loop with communication of the activities over the term through our normal portals. We use our Facebook page (go and like us), Skool loop app (free download), our school calendar (see link below) and our newsletter. We are also using 'Seesaw' again in the classrooms this year. This is an amazing tool for the teachers and links to individual classes. Last year, this was invaluable when we went into lockdown, so please scan the QR code your child(ren) are bringing home and download this app.
A massive thanks to everyone who has returned the communication sheet we sent out this week. We rely on this to update our school systems and hopefully you will have read all the ways we try to communicate with our families.
Our teams are beginning the year with units of work around getting to know their class, themselves and their teachers - making connections. We will then move to units of work about our link with the Te Henui river, our school history and their class tree. Our team had two great 'Teacher Only Days' last week to get ready for the year, including a session with Paul Rangiwahia and Damon Ritai.

START OF YEAR INFO
Sunhats
Please ensure your child has a bucket hat for use each day at school. These hats need to be named. Vogeltown School hats can be purchased at the office for $17, but any bucket hat is fine to be worn. Your child will also need suitable sun protection, applied before coming to school. We do have some sunscreen in each classroom - however this is not suitable for sensitive skin.
Drink Bottles
Please ensure your child brings a drink bottle to school every day. The drinking fountains are currently closed and it's really important that our kids keep hydrated in this hot weather.
School Stationery
It is very important that students have the correct stationery to start the term. Please phone the school office if you require another copy of your child's stationery list or for further information regarding stationery requirements. You can still purchase stationery from any of the local stores in New Plymouth, e.g Warehouse Stationery, The Warehouse, Paper Plus etc.
Attendance
All students and parents should strive for 100% attendance. School is a busy, active environment and non-attendance simply means that students fall behind with their learning and this can adversely affect friendships and limit opportunities. Please phone 753 6843 or text (021753680), email office@vogeltown.school.nz or use 'Skool Loop' to notify us of a student absence.
Leaving the School Grounds
Children may not leave the grounds without written permission from a parent or caregiver. Parents collecting or returning children in school time are asked to ring in advance to let the office know that the child needs to be collected. Our office staff will arrange for your child to be brought out to you to be collected.
VOGELTOWN HOME AND SCHOOL 2022
We are aware that so many of our families are busy, so we try to make roles within this group 'low key' and we don't do any fundraising activities that will take a lot of your time.
Last year the Home and School raised over $15,000 and this was an amazing effort - especially in another year of Covid. We would love to see some new faces at our Home and School committee - we are keen to get the year going with our first event the School Whanau Fiesta (picnic) hopefully!?
We have a meeting this coming Wednesday night at 7pm in the senior school staffroom - PLEASE feel free to come along, have a cuppa, have a chat, have a good laugh and see if you can help this group out and in the turn the school in anyway.
VOGELTOWN SCHOOL FEES/DONATION
More information can be found on the Ministry of Education's website.
Mr O
COVID-19 UPDATE FOR BEGINNING 2022
As we did last year, we will continue to follow guidance from the Ministries of Health & Education. Current protocols are around good hygiene and everyone consciously using the Covid Tracer App / QR codes at entrance points to the school please.
Our biggest priority is to keep the staff, students and community safe from the threat of Covid. The new strain, Omicron, seems to be more transmissible and the symptoms are even more like the flu. If you or your child(ren) do get sick with flu like symptoms, please stay home, get tested and let us know.
The biggest change for the 'Red light setting;' this year is the addition of Y4, Y5 and Y6 learners and teachers having to wear masks. If you have an exemption for your child please let us know at the school office.
Below I have added our 'Red setting protocols' at Vogeltown School. These are in poster form in each classroom. This was also emailed out and attached to our Facebook page last week. If you have not done so already, please have a read.
SENIOR SCHOOL UPGRADE
Today we got the concrete in the holes around the piles. The next step is to get the decking on and then put in new doors for the classrooms - this will add more ventilation and open learning for these classrooms.
You will also notice that our school hall roof colour has changed from orange to grey. The hall has also had a new coat of paint and ties in with the colours of the rest of the school. A big thank to the Vogeltown Board of Trustees who have paid for this work to be done and to keep our 70 year old hall looking pristine!
All the roofs on the senior school will eventually be replaced over this term. We are slowly getting used to scaffolding around the place!

FOUR YEAR OLD FRIDAY DATES - TERM 1 2022
SWIMMING AND OUR SCHOOL POOL 2022
A big thanks to Mr McAuley who got the pool ready over the holidays - it is looking great!
We are not selling keys to the pool for our Vogeltown school whanau at this stage. In the 'Red' setting of the Covid plan, we feel it is too bigger risk for whanau to congregate on site in this setting. We apologise for this in 2022 - hopefully we can offer this in Term 1 of 2023.

1) Please remember to contact the school office if your child is absent. You can do this via Skool Loop, text 021 753 680 or ph 06 753 6843. Please do not use SeeSaw for student absences - these must come through the office.
2) Please be courteous before and after school with parking around the school sites. We have lots of kids and not enough parks, so please allow time to get to school and be patient around the streets.
3) We sent home a 'communication sheet' this week - please send these back to school asap so we can update our records. Or, if you are very digital savvy, email the school - office@vogeltown.school.nz
