Madison Field Trip Reminder
Depart Rose Glen approximately 8:50 am and return to Rose Glen approximately 5 pm. Please plan accordingly.
Math Workshop
Mathematicians have entered into their final math domain of Measurement & Data. That sounds cool, doesn’t it? We have started Unit 7 with a small “mini-unit” on line plots. This week students have been busy making and analyzing line plots. The line plot summative assessment will be Monday. Next week mathematicians will be working with finding perimeter and area. The last math MAP testing will take place Tuesday, May 15 - Thursday, May 17.
Questions to ask about math:
Take a look at an analog clock and ask your student to tell you what time it is. (to the exact 1 minute)
Give some hypothetical situations, referencing an analog clock, that force your student to figure out the passing of time.
“Mom dropped you off at soccer practice at 5:15 pm. She picked you up at 6:45 pm. How long were you at soccer practice?”
Reading & Language Workshop
Readers have been exploring our new unit; PERSPECTIVE. In our first book, Mama’s Nightingale Saya's mother is sent to an immigration detention center, and Saya finds comfort in listening to her mother's warm greeting on their answering machine. To ease the distance between them while she’s in jail, Mama begins sending Saya bedtime stories inspired by Haitian folklore on cassette tape. Moved by her mother's tales and her father's attempts to reunite their family, Saya writes a story of her own—one that just might bring her mother home for good. Literature Discussion Groups are currently reading books that also support their learning about perspective.
Writing Workshop
Writers are bringing history to life by learning how to read informational text and take notes that are organized as well as useful in order to become an “expert” on a event from history.
Talking Points in ELA:
What period in history are you learning about?
What is something that is interesting or new that you have read?
Are you currently in an LDG? What is the title of your book and what is it about?
Science
In science, we have been learning about the different plant and animal systems. We have worked with bean seeds to learn about the different parts of the seed. We put seeds in bags with water on cotton balls to see if they would grow without soil. Then we learned about the flower structure. We dissected flowers to find the different parts that we learned about. After learning about flowers, we learned about the roots and stems of plants and what their jobs are. We did two different experiments - one with celery and colored water and then the other with white carnations and colored water. We learned how the stems brought water to the leaves and flowers and we could see that by how the celery and carnations changed colors.
Now we have moved on to learning about animal systems. We have been busy learning about nutrition/growth, survival/self defense, reproduction and group behavior. Each student chose an animal they are learning about. Using library resources and resources on Showbie, students have been researching and taking notes on these different structures. They are putting together a book on Book Creator.
The next part of the project is where students have been asked to complete a project to go along with their book - a poster, a model, or a diorama. These projects are due on Wednesday, May 9th. Students will be presenting their projects to their classmates.
