From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
The Thanksgiving holiday has arrived and I hope everyone is feeling a bit of gratitude for the many wonderful things in our lives. Research has shown that gratitude can enhance our relationships, improve our physical and mental health, increase our empathy, and even help us sleep better at night. Today, I'm grateful that our CDS community continues to learn and grow and stay positive even as winter begins and final exams approach.
7 Scientifically Proven Benefits Of Gratitude That Will Motivate You To Give Thanks Year-Round- Forbes
I hope all of you have had a restful Thanksgiving break!

2019-20 Fill the Sleigh (Nov 18th - Dec 13th)
This year, we will be collecting everyday household items for The Holt Center in Ilsan. The Center is a residential care facility for around 300 residents, ranging in age from toddlers to adults, all of whom have some sort of disability.
Students are encouraged to bring in anything that goes in a house, from toiletries like soap and toothpaste to kitchen items such as ramen, rice, or canned food. All donations must be new and unused. If you have any questions about Fill the Sleigh, speak with a Student Council Representative. We are excited to see CDS Middle School Pioneering to Serve!

Morning Calm InstaRead
To encourage student participation, the library has created an InstaRead board with a short description for the 5 Chapter and 5 Middle School book nominees. After students read a book, they can come to the library and get a "InstaRead Like" sticker to put on the bulletin board. We hope that by seeing what their teachers and friends are reading, students will want to read these Morning Calm books and vote for their favorite!

Service Learning at the Holt Ilsan Welfare Town
As many of you know, CDS Middle School has been fund raising this fall season to support the Holt Welfare Center in Ilsan. We were very fortunate this week to have been able to visit the center and learn more about the people who will benefit from our Fill the Sleigh program.
We got to know that there were 198 people housed currently in the Holt Center, too. We arrived back at school and realized the people were thankful just to be in a whole family-like community, and we found that we should be thankful for all we have! We are encouraging Fill the Sleigh donations to help the many people housed in the Holt Center.

2019-20 MS Science Fair
This year's MS Science Fair captivated middle school students and challenged them to create a meaningful and insightful scientific experiment.
Students worked for weeks or months to carry out experiments in the fields of biology, chemistry, and astronomy. Their work was presented and judged on Friday in two categories: Poster and Presentation.
Presenters engaged in a TED Talk style presentation by using a lab report slide show to explain their experiment. These students got up in front of the entire middle school to present their work and gaining valuable public speaking experience.
Students that competed in the poster category created a visual display of their experiment complete with explanations of each section of the scientific process. The students that made posters had to explain their work effectively to the judges and endure interviews and questions from the panel.
CDS is happy to celebrate the top three winners in each category as they represent key values of our schools mission. These curious critical thinkers used collaboration to bring the community together and communicate a true demonstration of their character. Congratulations to all participants in this year's CDS Science Fair!

G6 group activity - The Role Play on “Stereotypes”
6th Grade Role Play on Challenging “Stereotypes”
In Korean class during Term 2 6th graders engaged in a role play activity designed to challenge stereotypes. We shared the stereotypes that we have experienced at home and abroad in the past. It was an important time for us to reflect on which stereotypes we may hold and why it's important to get rid of them.
