Information To You From The Desk of Mark Watson - Principal

SAFETY WEEK

The student did a wonderful job completing the safety week topics. The information included earthquake and fire drills, Erin's Law, recess evacuation, lock down, and other necessary safety procedures. Our school is committed to making student safety a top priority.

No School on October 15th and October 18th

All 4J schools will be closed on Friday, October 15, a day that is an annual event built into the school year to allow teacher important time for planning and collaboration. All 4J schools will also be closed on Monday, October 18. The 4J school board approved the calendar change on October 6. The calendar change is for two purposes:

• The day will provide some critically needed transition time to address program shifts, staff departures, reassignments, leaves and other accommodations related to the statewide vaccine mandate that is effective October 18.

• The day also will provide planning, preparation and catchup time for teachers and other staff to address potential student quarantines and other COVID-specific needs, along with their regular work.

To free up more time for staff to address COVID-related needs, the district also is pausing all staff training until January. Professional learning is important, but 4J’s top priorities right now must be COVID safety, care and connection.

Jog-A-Thon next Thursday (October 14th)

Students will participate in a school-wide jog-a-thon that has been planned for October before the rain really hits the Willamette Valley. The event serves a variety of purposes. The promotion of physical activity, community, and the opportunity for students/families to donate to our PTO. All funds raised will go directly to benefit students and student activities at Awbrey Park. Please dress your student appropriately for a little physical activity around our track!

OHA/UO COVID Screening Testing - No School Day 10/15 = No Testing this Week

Due to the no-school day this Friday, 10/15, there will be no Covid-19 Screening Testing this week. Testing will resume the following week. If you are seeking testing this week, please consider University of Oregon’s free community testing with pre-registration and walk-up options daily, Monday-Friday.

Spotlight on Reading

As a Title school , we provide students with extra instructional support beyond the regular classroom to help children meet state standards in core academic subjects. A Title schoolwide program is a comprehensive program used to upgrade the complete educational program, raising academic achievement for all the students. The primary goal is to ensure all students, particularly those who are low-achieving, demonstrate at least proficient levels of achievement. Our amazing staff will soon begin working with students to begin implementing reading strategies and progress monitoring goals for our school.

Student Personal Items Brought to School

We have seen an increase of students bringing personal items to school. Please know that many of the items can cause a disruption to the learning environment and/or may be lost or damaged. Please check with the teacher of your student to make sure any item brought to school is approved and appropriate for school.

Counselor's Corner

Ms. Ashli is our school counselor this year. She is a wonderful resource for both students and parents. She would be happy to discuss social and emotional supports for student and/or behavior support suggestions for parents. Mental health for our students is a priority. Ms. Ashli would be happy to work with your student and give parents the support they need. Feel free to send an email, or call the school, in order to connect with her.
