10 Battle of the Books Read!

Parcc Testing

We will continue our testing next week. Students will also be taking the test on their Chromebooks, therefore it is extremely important that students come to school each morning with their Chromebook fully charged.

This week we read a story called Smokejumpers, which was a nonfiction story describing the job of a Smokejumper. It was interesting to learn about the difficulties involved with their job. We also focused on finding the important or main idea of the sections in the story. We also worked on determining an author's purpose.

Students also began writing stories about food falling from the sky, using the story Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs for inspiration. We are focusing on incorporating interesting adjectives to make the stories fun to read. I can't wait to see how the final products turn out next week!

We focused on finding the area of a rectangle this week, and understanding the difference between area and perimeter. Students learned the formula area = base x height or area = length x width to help them find the area. We have been playing a game called Rugs and Fences to reinforce these skills. After we finish our Parcc testing next week, we will move on to discover how to find the area of a parallelogram and triangle.

We started a new science unit about waves and energy. Waves are everywhere! We discovered so much about the different types of waves that are all around us. Ask your child about some of the types of waves we discussed this week.
