Comic-Con for 5th graders?!
Charmaine Bride, librarian at Ott ES, helped to facilitate the vision and Genius Hour Project of one of her fifth graders, Kennedy. Kennedy helped to arrange the guest speakers such as Ms. Chinatsu Oku from the East Asia Institute to come and present to the students on the culture of Japan; and representatives of the Star Trek Fan Club who are hosting a writing contest.
Kennedy also brainstormed along with Charmaine to design activities that were of interest to students and would also possibly teach them a thing or two and allow them to be creative. Sounds like the 4C's! The library hosted games such as Chopstick Pickup Race, Making Buttons, Pop-Up Shadow Puppet Theater, Star Wars Finger painting and more.
This event was very much in line with the interests of the students as the Graphic Novel and Manga genre is the most checked out genre at Ott ES.
Up to $50,000 in cash grants for makerspaces!
