Kay Franklin Elementary Library

Parent News August 2018

Welcome Back!

It's almost time for our 2018-2019 school year to begin! My name is Karen Piedra, and I am your child's school librarian. This will be my 6th year as librarian at Kay Franklin Elementary, and my 18th year as an educator. I enjoy reading, recommending books for your child to read, helping him/her locate books, and creating fun lessons that correspond with what students are learning in their classroom. I am excited to say hello to families families from last year and meet new students and families! Be sure to stop by the library to say hello during our Meet the Teacher event.

NISD Overdrive: Read for Free!

Does your enjoy reading? Did you know you can download books for FREE on your devices and take them with you anywhere? Download the Overdrive app on your device and start reading today! Students log into Overdrive with S followed by their student ID number.

COLTS READ!

Did you know our school has a schoolwide reading program?

Students are given a monthly minutes reading goal:

ECC-1st grade = 300 minutes per month

2nd-5th grade = 400 minutes per month

Students record book titles on the log and get a parent signature. When it's complete, the student brings it to the library and earns a spirit stick. Students also have the opportunity to earn invitations to library events throughout the year. Please encourage your child to read for pleasure, fill out their COLTS READ logs and return them to the library. Return your summer reading log by August 31, 2018, and attend a special reading event. Visit the library for more details or contact karen.piedra@nisd.net .
