FCE Counselor Newsletter

3rd Quarter 2021-2022

School Counseling Services

Counselors are essential educators and mental health professionals in the school system. We are growing graduates by teaching educational, career, personal, and social development at all ages!

Personalized Counseling continues for students! Remember, this year I'm meeting with each student through individual meetings. This is a special time for students to tell me about themselves, their strengths, and their goals for the future.

Great 8 Skills for Daily Living: Goal-Directed Behavior

This quarter, your child is learning various ways to improve their goal directed behavior so that he or she can accomplish tasks and succeed. As with any skill, mastery takes regular, intentional practice. Fortunately, the more confident and competent a young person becomes with the skills, the more “portable” the skills will be. This means that these same skills will be more readily available down the road, in other situations, when your child encounters challenging social or work situations. Listed below are some "I CAN" statements students can say when they are setting and achieving the goals they have set for themselves.

Goal-Directed Behavior Classroom Guidance

Student "I can" Statements:

  • Keep trying when unsuccessful
  • Take steps to achieve goals
  • Try to do her/his best
  • Seek out additional knowledge or information
  • Take an active role in learning
  • Do things independently
  • Ask to take on additional work or responsibilities
  • Show creativity in completing a task
  • Seek out challenging tasks
  • Work hard on projects

No Place for Hate

FCE has completed 2 No place for Hate lessons thus far. The first was focused on Cultural Awareness, where each grade level explored different cultures with a focus on Native Americans. They then created a Heart Map to share the things they hold close to their heart. For the second lesson FCE celebrated Kindness Day that was on January 13th. Kindness posters where hung down each grade level hallway, and students were challenged to complete kindness tasks and add them to the chart. In addition, students listened to stories on kindness and had classroom discussion on how they can show kindness towards the people around them.
