Robinson, the great ball player
Branch Rickey says, “we can’t fight our way through this, Robinson. We’ve got no army. There’s virtually no body on our side. No owners, no umpires, very few newspapermen. And I’m afraid that many fans will be hostile. We’ll be in a tough position. We can win only if we can convince the world that I’m doing this because you’re a great ballplayer and a fine gentleman.” This shows perseverance because even though Robinson was facing tough times, he didn't loose his courage and he continued to be determined. Taking a chance
Robinson says, “I continued to hold out and demanded to know what would happen if the Monarch fired me. The Dodger scout replied quietly that he didn’t believe that would happen. I shrugged and said I’d make the trip I figured I had nothing to lose.” This shows perseverance because even though Robinson knew he could get fired he took the chance and didn't loose his hope.
