The Simon School Days Newsletter

Dear Parents and Families of Simon Elementary:
Just a reminder that winter break is from December 20 through January 4. Students return to school on January 5, 2015.
Friday, December 19 is an Early Dismissal Day. Simon is dismissed at 12:40. Lunch will be served this day. No PM EC/PREK this day.

School Closing due to Weather Events
Should weather or some other unexpected circumstances require the school to be closed or the students to be dismissed early, the district will be using the School Messenger system and information will be broadcast over radio station WROK (1440 AM) in Rockford or other local radio or television stations.
WIFR even offers text messaging of school closings. If you are interested in this option, go to their web site at http://www.wifr.com. Parents are asked to listen for early school closings during days of bad weather conditions.
When school is dismissed early for emergency reasons, (inclement weather, specific school building problems/situations, etc.) all after school activities at that building are cancelled, unless noted otherwise. Winnebago Kids Club is cancelled in the event of such emergency cancellations of school as well.
Lost and Found Items
Please put names on all coats, sweaters, hats, boots, etc., so items found can be quickly and easily returned to their owners. Students who find lost articles are asked to bring them to the lost and found areas at Simon. Students who have lost articles may check the lost and found on the lower level under the Principal’s Pride bulletin board before and after school, or at other times with teacher permission. Any articles not claimed at the end of the school year will be given to a charitable organization

Preschool Screening - January 16
Winnebago CUSD #323 will conduct preschool screenings for the 2014-2015 school year on Friday, January 16. These children may be eligible to attend the Winnebago School District Preschool for the 2014-15 school year.
The preschool screening is to determine eligibility for our preschool program and for you to have a better understanding of your child's strengths and areas for improvement. We encourage everyone with preschool aged children (ages 3-5) to participate in screening regardless of your interest in the preschool program.
The screening will assess your child’s developmental skills in the following areas: academic concepts, gross and fine motor skills, speech and language, social, behavior, self-help skills, and vision and hearing.
Screening appointments take approximately one hour. Children have to be three years old at the time of the screening on January 16.
The screenings will be held at Dorothy Simon Elementary 309 S. Benton St. Winnebago, IL 61088. Please call 815.335.2318 to make an appointment.
Scholastic's 6th-Annual Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive
Scholastic's 6th-Annual Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive has begun! The Scholastic Pajama Program's mission is to provide New Pajamas and New Books to children in need, many of whom are waiting and hoping to be adopted. .
These children live in various situations including group homes, shelters and temporary housing facilities and are shuffled often from one place to another. Many of them have been abandoned, abused or neglected. Most of these children have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a mother or father tuck them in at bedtime with warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story. Some of the children we serve are living with their families below the poverty level, in desperate need of food, clothing and shelter.
Since 2001, Pajama Program has donated over one million pajamas and books to children nationwide.
The programs runs until December 12th.

A Note From the Nurse
Dental examinations are required by the State of Illinois for students entering Kindergarten and 2nd grade.
Many dental exams were received at the beginning of the school year. If you have not turned in an examination please do so as soon as possible. Exams will be collected until May 15th. Thank you.
“Waves of Fun” at Magic Waters Water Park!
Just like the Six Flags Theme Park program, students pick out FUN books, and read for 6 hours. The students keep track of their reading hours at home and return the log to you for a free day admission pass to Magic Waters Water Park.
This pass is valid during the 2015 summer season.
Reading logs should have been sent home by your child's teacher last week. Reading logs must be turned into the teacher by January 30, 2015. (NOTE: Homework reading does not count.)
Elementary Students Attending District Sporting Events
Now that another sport season is underway, many of you will be attending games to show your support. While we hope you will attend the events to support our schools, it also is imperative that any student fifth grade and younger is accompanied by an adult.
It is necessary that students fifth grade and younger be supervised. If a student that is fifth grade or younger is at a game without adult supervision, they will be asked to call home and be picked up. All students attending athletic events at our high school or an away school must follow school rules at all times.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this issue, it simply ensures the safety and protection of your child.
