GAMES NEEDED FOR INDOOR RECESS
With the rainy season approaching, we are in need of some simple, quick games that kids can play if we have indoor recess. We’re looking for new or gently used games with all of the pieces that are easy to play and can be completed in 15-20 minutes. Some examples of upper elementary games are Uno, Sorry and Trouble. For the younger kids, it could be Candyland, Chutes and Ladders or Go Fish. I’m sure there are lots more that you know about and those would be ok too. If you have any games to donate, please drop them off in the labeled bin just outside the main entrance of the school. The bin will be in place on Friday, October 1st. Thanks so much for your help with this.

WITH MUCH APPRECIATION!

OFFICE UNAVAILABLE DURING DISMISSAL

COGAT SCREENER
In October, all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students in Beaverton will be administered the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener. This 30-minute test measures students’ learned reasoning abilities through verbal/picture analogies, number analogies and figure matrices.
Currently the main purpose for administering the CogAT is to identify students for TAG in the area of intellectual ability. Students who score at the 97th percentile or above on the CogAT screener will be invited to test with the full version of the CogAT that is used for potential TAG identification. The full version of the CogAT will be given in late October. For more information about testing, please contact your school’s TAG facilitator.

TALENTED AND GIFTED INFORMATION
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement in reading and/or math. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office or linked here. Completing this form gives our school TAG Committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of the form’s completion.
Please complete and return the Parent Information Form to your child’s teacher no later than Friday, October 15th. Nomination forms are available on the TAG Website.
If you have any questions please email Hope Long at hope_long@beaverton.k12.or.us

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
So, why does Hispanic Heritage Month start on September 15? The day is significant because it marks the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua. On September 16, Mexican independence is celebrated, while Chile honors its independence on September 18.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL
International Walk + Roll to School Day is October 6th this year. This is a fantastic time to encourage our students and families to walk + roll to school and help with our extremely congested parking lots. Due to COVID restrictions, our celebration will look different this year:
For elementary and comprehensive middle schools:
Every elementary and comprehensive middle school will receive a scooter/helmet grand prize and five reflective drawstring bags with smaller prizes to raffle off to students. We will provide K-5th teachers and 6th-8th 1st period teachers with a checklist of their students to mark how they traveled to school that day. Students who walk, bike, scooter, skate, roll, bus, or carpool to school on Oct. 6th are eligible to enter the raffle. The travel checklist will be the students’ raffle entry. Additionally, each K-8 school will receive a $20 prize to raffle off to teachers who turn in their checklist. Please add October 6th to your school’s calendar and share the newsletter article below, and attached graphics, with your school community. Additional instructions and prizes will be delivered to your school soon!
International Walk + Roll to School Day
On October 6th, 2021 join people from around the world as we celebrate International Walk + Roll to School Day. Walk, bike, scooter, skate, roll, bus or carpool to school and be entered to win fun prizes. The grand prize winner will earn a new scooter with helmet! Walking and rolling to school is great for kids, our community and our planet. Here are the top five reasons:
1. Fewer vehicles driving to school reduces traffic congestion and carbon emissions near schools and in our parking lots.
2. More people walking and rolling builds school community and makes routes safer.
3. Physical activity boosts kids’ readiness to learn and improves their physical and mental health.
4. Kids have fun with friends and bond with families while walking and rolling together.
5. Being outside builds independence and lifelong transportation skills.
