The WAVA Wave

May 1, 2016

A Message from our Principal...

Dear WAVA Parents & Students –

I am so enjoying the sunshine and spring weather. This year has gone so fast that it doesn’t see possible that we only have 7 more weeks of school! This is the time of the year when we are looking for a strong finish to the year, while also thinking ahead and planning for next year and this is the time when our WAVA Core Value Communicate, Collaborate, Celebrate really kicks in!

There is so much important information to share with you about finishing this year, state testing, re-registering, and the amazing changes we have on the horizon for next school year that good Communication becomes even more important. Please make sure that you are checking on our webpage https://www.smore.com/b3h9q to keep up on all the newest information! We really want to hear from all of you what your plans are for next year, so please communicate with us through your OLS re-registration link to let us know if you are returning, not returning, or currently undecided.

The WAVA teachers are also very focused on Collaborating to plan for next year, making sure that all students have the proper placement in our new curriculum, that we are serving all of our students well, and sharing that information with you!

Last but not least – let’s Celebrate! Coming up the last week of school will be our online 8th grade graduation as well as a live ceremony in Tacoma for those who can make it. Watch for more information about those events to come to you soon! In addition to those celebrations, many teachers will be doing year-end outings and events to honor students and celebrate a successful school year. We hope that you will join us to celebrate and to connect with other families!

The Counselor Connect

Did you know that 7th and 8th graders may be eligible for a scholarship that fully covers tuition, some fees and a small book allowance at over 50 state universities, colleges, and career institutes? While it is only available to students who meet eligibility requirements, the College Bound Scholarship is an incredible opportunity for low-income students to realize the dream of a college education. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must meet any one of the following criteria:

• Student is currently in foster care or a dependent of the state.

• Student’s family receives basic food/TANF benefits.
• During 7th or 8th grade, household income from all sources (taxable and nontaxable) is less than or equal to the amounts in the chart below:

If your student meets any of the required criteria and you are interested in pursuing the scholarship, you must complete the scholarship application prior to June 30 of the year the student finishes 8th grade. The application and additional information can be found at
http://www.readysetgrad.org/college/college-bound-scholarship-program

If you have questions, you can contact College Bound staff at

collegebound@wsac.wa.gov

or (888) 535-0747

Also, please watch your kmail for additional information from me. I will be running a Class Connect session in May with further details on how to apply for the College Bound Scholarship.

Using Texting/SMS for Communication

Good news for the 2016-17 school year, WAVA will be communicating with families via text messaging! We want to be sure you are receiving the most current school communications. Please be sure to check that your primary phone number is up-to-date in the OLS. Starting in August, we will begin sending 1-2 text communications per month to our enrollment approved families. If you do not wish to be contact via text, you will need to reply with STOP when you receive our first text message – this will permanently opt you out. If you change your mind and would like to begin receiving text message, you can contact Denise Roberts at info@wava.org to reverse the decision.
