Teacher Tip
Dyslexia Awareness
Comal ISD hosted its annual Dyslexia Awareness Night on Oct. 18. We began the evening with a presentation from Megan Lozano with Region 20 explaining the 2022 Texas Dyslexia Handbook updates. Families were then invited to participate and learn about dyslexia facts/screening, Comal ISD’s new dyslexia curriculum, and ways we are supporting our students with dyslexia.
Many teachers in our district serve students who have been identified with dyslexia. For this reason, it is important for teachers to understand how dyslexia can affect a student’s performance in the general education classroom. It is a good idea to have a conversation with the dyslexia support teacher (elementary) or a reading strategies teacher (secondary) to find out how to help students who may be struggling.
This quick, 5-minute TED Ed Video called, “What is Dyslexia” is a good resource to provide an overview of dyslexia. Take a look and then use the resources below to help guide you as you learn ways to help our students reach their full potential.
